2 Police Officers Shot, but Saved by Bulletproof Vests (Video)
BELLEFONTAINE NEIGHBORS, Mo. (AP) — Two St. Louis-area police officers have been shot in the chest, but bulletproof vests apparently saved both from serious injury.
The shooting happened before 8 a.m. Thursday in the St. Louis County town of Bellefontaine Neighbors. The gunman barricaded himself inside a home amid a heavy police presence.
Bellefontaine Neighbors Mayor Bob Doerr told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that both officers are going to be OK. He says one is a male sergeant, the other a female patrol officer. Both were conscious and talking after the shooting.
Doerr did not have details about what led to the shooting. Officers were trying to negotiate with the man who barricaded himself inside the home.
Several emergency crews, fire trucks and police officers were seen in the 10100 block of Bellefontaine Road just after 7:30 a.m. There is reportedly a subject barricaded in a home in the area.
According to officials, the shots fired at the officers hit their vests. Police sources told News 4 the officers, described as a man and woman, were shot while attempting to arrest the suspect for assault. The source said the officers tried to tase the suspect but the taser malfunctioned.
Around 8:30 a.m., Both directions of Interstate 270 were closed near Bellefontaine Road due to the police activity. During the closure, eastbound traffic is being diverted at Route 367 and westbound traffic is being diverted to Riverview.
