A New Overview On Paul

By Peter Goodgame:  https://redmoonhawaii.wordpress.com/

Back in January of 2013 I was invited to a big bible prophecy conference in Dallas, Texas, to give three presentations based on my books and research. At that time I really thought I had it all figured out, and my end-times outlook was solidly Dispensational. In the aftermath of the conference, through meeting several key people, I was challenged to examine some very serious accusations regarding the Apostle Paul. A few highly motivated bible scholars had collected evidence that Paul was a false apostle, allegedly mentioned by Jesus in Revelation 2:2. This led to a season of study and prayer as I tried to sort it all out, and I finally offered my personal conclusion in my online series “Jesus and the Law,” which I finished on the last day of 2013.

Part of my deep study into the life and ministry of Paul included diving into the massive book about Paul written by N.T. Wright, which came out in November 2013. I figured that since I had listened to the enemies of Paul it was only fair that I take a look at the work of a serious scholar who supported Paul. The only problem was that the book was 1700 pages long! It took me many months to read it, and I think I finished it while I was visiting China in September of 2014. Yet at the beginning I dove right in, and it did not take long for me to realize how wrong Paul’s detractors were, and how shallow their evidence was, compared to the in-depth treatment given to Paul by Tom Wright.

Hallelujah, the big book on Paul helped to save me from going down the misguided route of Hebrew Roots! Unfortunately this is often a natural route to take from a dispensational mindset. Dispensationalists read the Old Testament prophets literally and try to apply it to today, and it is not a far stretch from that point to read the OT Law literally and try to apply it to today as well. I am not anti-Semitic by any means, and I do love digging into the OT to discover the Hebrew Roots of the New Testament. But I do have a litmus test when it comes to Hebrew Roots teaching: If it points forward to Jesus, then it is good; if it points back to Moses, then it is highly suspect!

N.T. Wright helped me to understand the OT through Paul’s eyes, which kept me from reading the Law literally, and even showed me that the Dispensationalist approach to prophecy was flawed as well. In fact NONE of the New Testament writers read their Bible the way that Dispensationalists teach it today! That’s because the Apostles were using a hermeneutic given to them by Jesus Himself. It’s no longer all about “literal interpretation” because the OT was always looking forward to spiritual realities. This is reflected in my new study of the end times focused on the New Exodus.

NOTE from Ephraim:  One of the major points of Dispensational teaching is that of a clear distinction between the Church and Israel (i.e. the current nation of Israel).  Essentially they teach the Church is merely a time frame injected by God into the chronology of history to secure a righteous group among the Gentiles (nations) although it was initiated by a handful of Judeans.  As can be deduced from The Birthright series the Church is a logical part of God’s plan to introduce righteousness for the so-called lost tribes of Israel and everyone else in the world who believe.  The reason a mistaken pre-tribulational rapture is important to the Dispensational crowd is to remove the Church from the world so that God can continue dealing with His so-called Israel, who they consider to be all tribes of Israel rather than Judahite-Edomites which they refuse to acknowledge.  The Hebrew-roots movement, in my opinion, is an attempt to indoctrinate true Israelites with Judaism and the maneuverings of a legalized law system which is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Paul is a genuine apostle and his teachings are the genuine Words of God.

In any case, the point of this post is to recommend that everyone, especially American Christians with dispensational backgrounds, take a second look at the way they read their Bibles. Don’t be afraid to dig deep and to question what you have been taught. Don’t be afraid to seek out other perspectives. Maybe even take a look at N.T. Wright’s book on Paul. Or if you don’t have the stamina for 1700 pages, take a look at the new book by Derek Vreeland which condenses Wright’s book down to about 120 pages.

…ephraim…Paul is truly an apostle of Christ. I think that those who attack him are stuck in identity crisis mode. So deeply attached to this physical, fleshly existence, that the spiritual body and its lack of limitations, stays incomprehensible, and unreal…That’s exactly what the “rapture” thing is all about….taking your physical body into eternity….not gonna happen…

I agree. I can’t figure out what the problem is. I have seen commentors on BIN ask for proof in the Gospels not in the writings of Paul. There is also someone, can’t think of the name, who writes long diatribes about the false teachings of Paul. Most of his scripture references are usually one verse taken out of context of the complete teaching. Paul can be difficult to understand particularly if someone only uses one verse at a time out of context.

    • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

“…how wrong Paul’s detractors were, and how shallow their evidence was…”

Their evidence only appears shallow to those who bear the armor of God. A seeker new to (or otherwise weak in) the Word will have to ignore the accusations against the Apostle, or else he will find himself terribly burdened by those accusations. Familiarity with the Word only (including all of the tools made available to us for examining the Greek Manuscripts), is the key to destroying the arguments of Paul’s accusers.

“Hallelujah, the big book on Paul helped to save me from going down the misguided route…”

Too bad he didn’t just go to the ‘other’ big Book.

“Dispensationalists read the Old Testament prophets literally and try to apply it to today, and it is not a far stretch from that point to read the OT Law literally and try to apply it to today as well.”

Chap sounds rather prone to error, in my opinion. Must be because he doesn’t know Scripture as he should. Comes from leaning to the work of men to support or to strengthen one’s beliefs, precisely as he just admitted to doing.

“If it points forward to Jesus, then it is good; if it points back to Moses, then it is highly suspect!”

The errors continue. If it points to Jesus absent any connection with Moses, then it is specious.

“It’s no longer all about “literal interpretation” because the OT was always looking forward to spiritual realities.”

Literal interpretation is about learning the rules. Spiritual interpretation comes from meditating on the rules once learned. (That is meditation in the biblical, King David, sense of the word – never the yogic transcendentalist kundalini shaktipat sense.)

“The Hebrew-roots movement, in my opinion, is an attempt to indoctrinate true Israelites with Judaism and the maneuverings of a legalized law system…”

I would agree that is a fair over-all assessment of the movement (replete with their own three-part icon that includes a ‘star of David.’ A believer who today remains ignorant of that symbol’s true import, proceeds in a most dire state of errant steerage caused by slackitudinal lazyosity [‘official’ medical term] – otherwise known as ‘being out of the Way.’) Judaism is Talmudic and is Kabbalistic. The Talmud and the Kabbalah are the seed which many Hebrew Roots ‘leaders’ seek to mingle with sound biblical teaching.

“Paul is a genuine apostle and his teachings are the genuine Words of God.”

And he who reads the Letters of the Apostle Paul and arrives at any other conclusion, is either very new to the search; is a very careless student of the Word; or is animated by another spirit. We have a virtually limitless stockpile of enemy doctrine to examine at our leisure (as we are led). Without exception there is a ‘flavor’ – there is a character of the enemy’s teaching – prevalent throughout all of it: It is the doctrine of humanism; the worship of mankind or of some other portion of the creation. New Age philosophy bathes in it. Gnosticism is permeated by it. The Ancient Mysteries radiate it. But the Letters of the Apostle Paul are overflowing with the clean and pure Spirit of the Son of God. The arguments against Paul are brought by unsettled seekers (if not outright and complicit agents of the Enemy) who fail to recognize in Paul the Spirit which should be leading them. To mistake Paul for an enemy is to have catastrophically failed to rightly identify both the Son and His Holy Spirit.

    • they.pierced.My.hands.and.My.feet.

Another way of saying it ; irrespective of Paul, per se, even if it had been instead of Paul,
James the Righteous with many letters, or letters from Mary, Yhshua’s mother, or John brother of James with many interesting letters…

Some of us are just to interested in Yhshua Himself, and what He says, and the glory He abides in. No offense intended, just the way it is.

      • Ephraim

No offense taken. However, I read all the letters including the four gospels.
