Fury on the Streets of Belfast as Locals Rage Following Sickening Attack (Video)

Violent anti-immigration riots have erupted across Belfast, Northern Ireland, following a brutal knife attack on a local resident. The unrest began after graphic video footage of the Monday night assault was widely shared on social media, sparking public outrage and swift condemnation from political leaders. 

The violence was triggered by a knife attack in North Belfast on Monday evening. Police arrested Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese refugee who arrived in the UK in 2023. He has been officially charged with attempted murder.  The victim, Stephen Ogilvie (in his 40s), suffered horrific injuries to his face, neck, and back. He has lost his left eye and remains hospitalized in serious condition.  Bystanders heroically intervened on the street to pull the attacker off the victim, preventing an attempted beheading. 

Following calls for mass demonstrations by right-wing and anti-immigration figures online, hundreds of protesters took to the streets on Tuesday night. Groups of masked men targeted properties where they believed immigrants or asylum seekers were living. Protesters set fire to at least 10 homes and multiple vehicles. A public transit bus was hijacked and torched on Newtownards Road. Roadblocks and burning barricades were erected across parts of the city. Multiple families, including one with a two-month-old baby, had to be rescued through flames by emergency services and evacuated under police protection. While the worst violence centered in East and North Belfast, sporadic unrest and protests spread to other Northern Irish towns, including Portadown, Ballyclare, and Antrim. 

The police and political figures have moved quickly to contain both the rioting and the underlying tensions. The family of Stephen Ogilvie issued an explicit statement calling for calm, stating that “overnight unrest is not welcome” and highlighting the valuable contributions of migrants. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill heavily condemned the rioters, with O’Neill labeling the targeting of homes as “disgusting cowardice” and “outright thuggery”. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) deployed armoured vehicles and water cannons to disperse crowds on Wednesday night. Extra police units have been brought into the city, and public transit services are being halted early to ensure public safety.
