First elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, he previously announced that he would not seek a third term in the 2026 Minnesota gubernatorial election. He also gained prominent national attention as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee alongside Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election. 

Enacted a historic $2.3 billion public education budget and implemented universal free breakfast and lunch for Minnesota students. Signed a major bipartisan climate bill targeting 100 percent clean electricity by 2040 while banning “forever chemicals” (PFAS). Recently signed an amendment to the Stop Harms From Addictive Social Media Act, requiring verifiable parental consent for children under 16 opening accounts. Expanded state-mandated paid family and medical leave for workers across Minnesota.

The controversy surrounding former Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Somali fraud money stems from massive, federally investigated schemes in which over $1 billion in state and federal funds were allegedly stolen by networks of nonprofits. The overwhelming majority of the 98 defendants charged by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) were of Somali descent.  The largest pandemic-relief scandal, in which prosecutors allege defendants looted roughly $250 million from child food assistance programs. Additional wide-ranging federal probes uncovered industrial-scale fraud in Medicaid housing assistance, autism therapy, and childcare programs, with total losses potentially reaching into the billions. The U.S. Treasury Department launched investigations into allegations that some of these siphoned taxpayer dollars may have been diverted to the terrorist organization al-Shabaab. 

The U.S. House Oversight Committee and federal investigators launched probes into how the fraud escalated to this magnitude. Critics, including House lawmakers and state whistleblowers, testified that the Walz administration ignored early warnings and retaliated against state employees who raised alarms, out of fear of political backlash and accusations of racism. In congressional hearings and other forums, Republican lawmakers have scrutinized Walz and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison for their alleged failure to safeguard taxpayer dollars.

Walz defended his administration, stating that state investigators (including the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) actually did much of the heavy lifting to uncover the schemes and secure indictments. He noted that his administration pushed through new legislation to combat fraud, such as payment withholding measures and the establishment of an independent inspector’s office.
