Russian forces have been making extremely slow progress in the Ukrainian battlefields over the past year, but their successes in the south and east of Ukraine could soon start to pay off. According to military experts and independent observers of the battlefield situation, in the coming weeks or months, Russia is likely to complete the capture of three strategically important areas.

The capture of all three – the city of Gulyaypole in the southeast and the cities of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd about 60 miles to the northeast – would give Russia an urban foothold, where it could base troops and build logistics for future offensives, as well as a new leverage in the peace negotiations mediated by the United States.

Experts note that Russia is unlikely to quickly turn these successes into further territorial expansion, given how slowly its forces have been advancing over the past year.

But Moscow could use these achievements in the negotiations, arguing that its progress – albeit slow – is inevitable, and that it would be more beneficial for Ukraine to cede land now in a deal than to lose it later in bloody battles.

Russia’s most threatening push is in the southeastern part of the Zaporizhia region.

Gulyaypole – a city that has been a stronghold of this frontline for years – is almost entirely under Russian control, according to the battle maps of independent groups and the words of Captain Dmitry Filatov, a Ukrainian officer who fights in this area.

Behind Gulyaypole stretch open fields, and there is almost nowhere for Ukrainian troops to take cover in buildings to shelter and hold off the Russian offensive.

About 40 miles west of Gulyaypole, Russian forces are approaching the outskirts of the city of Zaporizhia, a major industrial center with a population of 700,000, known for its metallurgy.

Battle maps show that Moscow’s troops are about 15 miles from the southern entrance to the city. Military experts warn that further progress would bring the area within range of small drone attacks, which would subject residents to round-the-clock aerial attacks.

In the Donetsk region, Ukraine has focused on defending the cities of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd, whose pre-war population totaled more than 100,000. The deployment of troops there, combined with the complex drone warfare, has slowed down Russian assaults to a creeping pace.

If Russia manages to fully capture these cities, it could use them to hide drone operators and utilize roads and rail lines to simplify logistics.

The next target is Konstantinovka.

Military experts say that the capture of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd would give Moscow a springboard for advancing north and approaching its goal of seizing all of the Donetsk region, about three-quarters of which it already controls.

A major target could be Konstantinovka, 25 miles further east. Konstantinovka is the southern gateway to a chain of cities that form Ukraine’s last major defensive line in the Donetsk region.

If it falls, almost all cities to the north will be within range of Russian drones, and Moscow will gain access to a key road connecting these cities. After the city was partially encircled last year, Russian forces, according to battle maps, have begun to infiltrate it this winter. Moscow has also intensified drone attacks on the roads that Ukrainian troops use to supply the city.

If Russian forces continue to advance on the battlefield, Ukraine is likely to face significant pressure on the diplomatic front – including from President Donald Trump, who has repeated Moscow’s argument that Ukraine should cede land in a peace deal to avoid further fighting.
