“President-elect Donald Trump told The Post Saturday he supports immigration visas for highly skilled workers, appearing to side with Elon Musk in the roiling intra-MAGA debate on the issue.

“I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them,” Trump said by phone, referring to the H-1B program, which permits companies to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations.  

“I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program,” added Trump, who restricted access to foreign worker visas in his first administration and has been critical of the program in the past. …”

Here is why:

1. First, nothing has changed. Trump didn’t campaign on ending legal immigration or the H-1B visa program. The issue was on the backburner until Christmas. Elon and Silicon Valley have always been addicted to H-1Bs. This was true two months ago and two years ago. The only thing that changed is that everyone got mad about it after Laura Loomer started the big fight over it.

2. Second, Sriram Krishnan whose appointment started all of this has nothing to do with immigration. Stephen Miller is in charge of immigration policy.

3. Third, Trump has always waffled on H-1B visas. He has said various things about it over the years and has taken different positions on it even during the 2016 campaign. Ultimately, Stephen Miller is the president of immigration and controls immigration policy.

4. Fourth, it is a good thing and a victory that the conversation is shifting from illegal immigration to legal immigration and that the MAGA base is moving to the Right on it.

5. Fifth, Congress would have to pass legislation to get rid of the H-1B program and reduce legal immigration, which was never going to happen anyway due to polarization.

In sum, the long and short of this is that legal immigration became much more controversial after Christmas. Laura Loomer deserves credit for forcing the issue. Hopefully, the Right will move further in this direction after the border calms down and illegal immigration is brought under control.
