Hurricane Milton – A Trip into Hell for the Poor
The forgotten. There is no high ground for the poor. With no financial means to escape. No car, no money to rent a secure hotel room, they are condemned to escape to a shelter.
As we found with the hellish Hurricane Irma in 2017 that strafed Florida right up the gullet, the shelter had its own particular kind of hell to offer the poor.
At first, we were given promises via the “European model” that the West Coast would be spared. Any moment it would veer east and sail off to landfalls other than Fort Myers. For a week prior to landfall, we had watched it move west, inch by inch. Those pretty little lines didn’t seem to want to hold fast with a determined path. Anyway it was a Cat one. Florida has had those. Lots… we can manage. Heck, there already had been two false alarms with the hurricanes meandering benignly out to sea
Then to our horror, not only did Irma move west, it was now a cat two, then three, then 4 – catastrophic. And the bull’s eye? Fort Myers.
Let me give you a couple of clips of the Fort Myers shelter during Irma. For those who had neither the money or transportation to escape. For those who waited too long.
More than six million Floridians had been ordered to evacuate, with at least 54,000 scattered in 320 shelters across the state. Still, for thousands, finding a shelter not at capacity had been hard to come by.
Now they say, the biggest evacuation since Irma is taking place as I write this.
Hell comes to the Floridians.

Here is an update on the worried folks who were trying to get in and how the shelter held up. 500 shelters for hundreds of thousands evacuees.
I still have many close friends in the community where I previously lived. My prayers for their safety and for all my friends and for the community that I so much enjoyed.
After Irma I determined to return North. That chapter closed.
Let’s keep our thoughts and prayers for all those who are going through this difficult time. Especially those who are forced for whatever reason to be in a shelter.
