Tehran and Washington have been locked in an escalating standoff since US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a multi-party 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
Tensions spiked last week when Iran shot down a US drone over sensitive Gulf waters following a series of tanker attacks that Washington blamed on Tehran, which has denied involvement.
Since then the arch-foes have been locked in a war of words, which escalated this week when Trump announced new sanctions against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
Iran has threatened to abandon some of its commitments under the nuclear deal unless the remaining partners — Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia — help it circumvent US sanctions and especially sell its oil.
In May, the US Air Force deployed several nuclear-capable B-52 Stratofortress bombers to the Gulf in response to what the Defense Department described as a possible plan by Iran to attack American forces in the region, as well as an aircraft carrier task force.

Russia ready to deliver S-400 system to Iran: report
Russia is ready to deliver S-400 air defence systems to Iran, but it has not received a relevant request from Iran yet, the press service of the Russian Federal Service of Military-Technical Cooperation told Sputnik on Friday.
“We are open for discussions on delivering S-400 Triumph air defence systems, including to Iran. Especially given that this equipment is not subject to restrictions outlined in UN Security Council’s resolution, issued on June 20, 2015. We have not received an official request from our partners on this matter yet,” a representative of the press service said during the International Military-Technical Forum Army-2019, which is currently being held outside Moscow.
In late-May, Bloomberg reported, citing its sources, that Russia had refused to sell Iran its S-400 air defence systems.
According to the agency, Russia explained its decision by saying that such a move would escalate tensions in the region. The Iranian Foreign Ministry, however, refuted the report.
The 5th International Military-Technical Forum Army-2019 started in Patriot Park in the Moscow Region on Tuesday and will run until Sunday.
Up to 120 nations participated in the forum’s opening ceremony, which is twice more than in 2018. In addition, 101 foreign firms are partaking in the event. Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency is an official media partner of the forum.

This is for the Canadian who is sure that The U.S. military is not on par with (China-Russia-Iran?) in the military world.
My points are coming from a 20 year U.S. Army vet: First you greatly under estimate the training and abilities of the U.S military. I have seen first hand how well trained the infantry and M-1 tank crews are trained for coordinated attacks with attach helicopters in support.
During the first desert Storm operation I had a close friend assigned to a Scout company who was the leading element for Calvary brigade. A Scout company has 120 soldiers 13 Bradley M3 fighting vehicles and 9 M-1 Tanks. This company came face to face with A retreating Iraqi armored Brigade (5000 plus men and all the associated armored vehicles) There was a violent sand storm, American’s were able to see the heat signatures of the Iraqi vehicles with there thermal imaging sights. That one scout company took up positions on the hills on either side of the highway and destroyed an entire Iraqi brigade and took over 5000 prisoners without the loss of one Bradley or M-1. When the Iraqis saw that their entire Brigade had been destroyed by a single Scout company they were astonished beyond measure.
I talked to a tank crewman who’s M-1 tank crested a hill and took two direct hits from two Iraqi T-72 tanks firing a Russian anti tank rounds at close range. Neither of the rounds penetrated the M-1′s armorer. Before the T-72′s could reload the American crew hit both of them with depleted uranium rounds that blew the the tank turrets 1/2 mile into the air (when an American round hits a Russian tank it sets off all the ammo stored inside). It was not a pretty sight.
I have another friend who was the commander of a Scout platoon. He told me they were destroying Russian T-72 and T-90 tanks using the 20 mm chain gun on the Bradley and depleted uranium rounds. He said the rounds melted the Russian armor. Please Keep in mind that every Bradley also has a tow or Hellfire missile system which can destroy an enemy tank 3 miles away.
I could go on and on but I am not going to because by now you have already seen there a many variables in battle.
