The paranormal reputation of Inunaki Village comes from a mixture of real crimes, abandoned locations, and internet urban legends. It’s often described as one of Japan’s most haunted or cursed places. Many Japanese citizens believe the village is real, but in reality, it’s probably fictional. There is some foundation of truth to the stories. Let’s look at the legend.
The Legend of Inunaki Village began in the 1990s with claims there is a hidden village deep in the mountains of Fukuoka Prefecture that does not recognize Japanese law. Some locals say there is at times a sign that is put up that reads: “The Japanese constitution is not in effect past here.” A Japanese psychiatrist made the suggestion that the Inunaki Village legend may have been influenced by American horror movies. The movies they are referring to are Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes, Deliverance, The Sawyer Family in Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Firefly Family in House of 1000 Corpses. Movies that Americans refer to as hillbilly horror.
According to legend the secret village is inhabited by violent or inbred residents who attack outsiders. Many of these outsiders vanish without a trace. There is no verified evidence such a community exists today. A real historical village with the same name existed centuries ago but was dissolved long before the legend began. Let’s look at a site that actually exists. That site is The Old Inunaki Tunnel. Most supernatural claims actually center on the nearby Old Inunaki Tunnel, which is real and now sealed off to the public. Japanese ghost hunting groups have reported the following:
Disembodied screams and voices
Shadow figures in the darkness
Sudden temperature drops
Cars stalling or electronics malfunctioning
Feelings of dread or being watched
Capturing EVPs outside of the tunnel
Strange blue orbs captured in photographs
Some legends say construction workers died building the tunnel and were buried inside the walls, because of this, there are restless spirits. The tunnel is considered by some to be among Japan’s most haunted places. The reason why the tunnel is haunted according to Yuki Kobayashi, Paranormal Investigator is due to the fact there was a 1988 murder that fueled the hauntings. A factory worker was abducted, tortured, and burned alive inside the tunnel by a group of attackers. The tunnel was later sealed with concrete. This tragedy helped transform the area into a horror legend hotspot. Many ghost stories claim his spirit still haunts the tunnel. A woman ghosthunter claims she saw a full body apparition of the man that was murdered. The apparition was walking outside of the tunnel and there was blood dripping down from his head.
Then near the tunnel is the “Cursed Phone Booth”. Legend has it that there is a phone booth near a bridge. Supposedly the phone rings at 2:00 AM and a voice urges people to come toward the village. Some stories say answering the phone leads to a curse or spirits of drowning victims will appear. Answering the phone will cause a monstrous demon to appear. Some locals say if you answer the phone, ghostly villagers will chase visitors with tools or weapons. All the villagers look inbred. In the nearby forest, cell phones will lose signal when approaching the area. The villagers have set up human traps in the forest. People who enter the forest will get lost and not find their way out and vanish from society forever. The reason why so many people believe in this legend is because 1. A real abandoned tunnel is in this remote forest; 2. A documented murder happened at the tunnel; 3. Isolation and darkness creates a supernatural atmosphere; 4. Internet storytelling amplifies rumors. 5. Japanese folklore traditions involve vengeful spirits. Even journalists visiting the site have reported eerie sensations but no confirmed supernatural activity. Another horror film called Howling Village is semi-based on the Old Inunaki Tunnel and from there the legend grew.
