JINN AT GOREME, TURKEY
Göreme and the wider Cappadocia region are widely considered “haunted” in folklore, largely due to legends of Jinns (spirits), abandoned cave dwellings, ancient underground cities, and creepy valleys that display echoes. While not officially documented, tourists report strange noises, feeling that there is a presence watching them, and unsettling vibes felt in old caves. Local traditions often speak of Cinler (Jinns) and fairies inhabiting the area’s ancient caves and empty houses. Some locals grew up hearing stories of “drum-playing Jinns” and shimmering lights in the night sky, particularly around Uçhisar and the valleys surrounding Göreme.
Mustafa Yildiz, a local says that he has seen Jinn at the abandoned cave houses & underground cities. Mustafa says that there are areas dotted with hundreds of crumbling, empty cave homes and vast, dark underground cities (like Derinkuyu) where thousands once lived and died, creating a naturally eerie atmosphere. Mustafa says he encountered 3 tall and dark entities inside the cave house. A Jinn pointed to the entrance, suggesting that Mustafa should leave. The Rose Valley and Red Valley are frequently described as “haunted” due to their labyrinthine ancient ruins and forgotten rituals. Many tourists have seen little fairies flying about during dusk hours. Some fairies are seen carrying wands of light. The region is home to several “ghost towns,” such as the Kayaköy Ghost Village, where an entire population was forced to leave in 1923, leaving behind empty windows and a palpable sense of “wrongness” that visitors still report today. Visitors and tourists have seen apparitions or odd mist moving about this village.
Areas like Rose Valley and its rock-carved churches are known for tales of ghost apparitions, forgotten rituals, and echoes from the past. Ali Ozturk has heard disembodied voices in the valley. Some of the voices are carrying on full conversation and when Ali investigated, there was no one there. Other tourists staying in cave hotels have reported strange, cold, silent, or “creepy” sensations in underground rooms. Staying in a cave hotel is the standard Göreme experience, but some guests have reported strange occurrences. Reviews of the Aza Cave Hotel mention hearing “strange growling” and feeling a “strange presence” at night. Deep subterranean cities like Derinkuyu and Kaymakli are described as hauntingly beautiful yet unsettling due to their cold, silent, and damp passageways that once housed thousands seeking refuge. Cold spots and hot spots are sometimes felt by the tourists. Ali once felt a hot spot that was so hot, he started sweating, then all of a sudden it became a cold spot. Ali has no explanation for that strange occurrence. My best friend Jeff Clifford and his friend from Turkey Ibrahim Dogan visited the Rose Valley. They both saw a strange man with an odd grin on his face. When they looked at the strange man, their back teeth started to hurt. When they looked back at where the strange man was, he was gone and the pain in their mouths went away. Ibrahim explained to Jeff, that they just had a Jinn encounter.
Now, let’s take a trip to England and check out the spirits that haunt Chillingham Castle!
CHILLINGHAM CASTLE GHOSTS
Yes, Chillingham Castle is widely considered one of Britain’s most haunted castles, known for numerous ghostly sightings and paranormal activity, including apparitions like the Blue Boy, Grey Lady, John Sage and other tormented spirits from its violent history, with phenomena reported in dungeons, torture chambers, and grand halls, attracting ghost hunters and being featured on paranormal TV shows. Let’s look at some of the ghosts of this castle.
The Blue Boy:
A child whose spirit appears as a blue light or figure in the Pink Room, said to be a boy bricked into a wall alive. A child’s agonizing crying is sometimes heard. During renovations in the early 20th century, workers found a child’s skeletal remains hidden inside a 10-foot-thick wall in the Pink Room. Reports indicate the child’s finger bones were worn down to the nubs, suggesting they desperately tried to scratch their way out. Remnants of blue fabric were found with the body. The Blue Boy is often seen as a bright blue flash, orb, or a “blue halo” before taking the form of a young boy. His presence is frequently preceded by low whimpering, cries, and a sudden drop in temperature. He is sometimes referred to as the “Radiant Boy” due to the glowing blue light that surrounds him. Despite the horrific origin, modern reports often describe him as a friendly, albeit sad resident.
The Grey Lady:
Lady Mary Berkeley, seen or heard rustling her skirt, searching for her husband who abandoned her. Often heard as the faint “rustle of a silk dress” in the corridors, she is said to be searching for her husband, who abandoned her for her own sister. Her presence is often accompanied by a sudden, wafting chill. Jill Sanders of Maryland says she captured an EVP of a woman saying…”where is he?”
The White Pantry Ghost:
A frail figure in white seen in the Inner Pantry who reportedly begs for water, possibly a victim of poisoning. Commonly reported phenomena include disembodied voices in the Chapel, phantom footsteps, cold spots, and batteries that drain unexpectedly. While some visitors find the atmosphere genuinely terrifying, others visit for the eclectic historical artifacts and unique, “unpolished” charm of the estate.
John Sage and the Torture Chamber:
Haunted by the spirits of tortured Scottish prisoners, including John Sage, the castle’s brutal executioner, with reports of aggressive energy and spectral figures. John Sage (The Butcher of the Scots): A sadistic medieval torturer whose spirit is said to haunt the Torture Chamber and dungeons. Visitors frequently report feelings of unease, nausea, or hearing heavy, dragging footsteps in these areas.
Other Spirits:
Monks, Scottish soldiers, and other tormented souls are believed to roam the castle and grounds, with unexplained voices, cold spots, and phantom footsteps frequently reported. The castle served as a battle stronghold and prison during medieval wars, witnessing brutal torture, executions, and massacres, leaving behind lingering energies. People report feeling touched, seeing apparitions, experiencing drained batteries, and hearing disembodied voices, with some spirits interacting differently with men and women. The castle’s reputation stems from its blood-soaked history of border skirmishes and brutal executions. A tourist named Lance Onslow of Port Orange, Florida witnessed a ghost of a Scottish soldier holding the side of his neck. Lance says that blood was squirting from his neck. Lance was shocked seeing this and thought it was an actor, only to see the Scottish soldier disappear.
