Saw two very bright “stars”, one above the other. But i know my night sky and noticed instantly these were out of place.

I was running a Northern Lights tour at Þingvellir, something I’ve done for over a decade, so I’m very familiar with the night sky and with the kinds of phenomena you normally see out there.

When we arrived at our final location, sometime around 9:50–10:00 pm, we stepped out of the car and almost immediately noticed a very bright fireball shooting across the sky. I’ve seen fireballs many times during tours, but this one stood out. It left a trail as expected, but unlike most fireballs I’ve seen, it didn’t break up, burst, or visibly end. Instead, it traveled from south to north for roughly 6–8 seconds and continued all the way until it disappeared behind the horizon. It also stayed the same color the entire time, which felt unusual compared to the color changes I normally see as fireballs pass through the atmosphere.

Later on, while we were stargazing and I was about halfway through my program, I noticed two very bright, star-like objects to the north-northwest, roughly in the direction of Hvalfjörður. What immediately caught my attention was that those “stars” were not supposed to be there. They were clearly out of place.

At first, both objects remained completely stationary relative to the surrounding stars for about 30 seconds. There was no drifting or slow movement at all. Then their brightness dropped slightly, maybe by around 20%, and they began to move.

The movement was unlike anything I normally associate with satellites. From our perspective, they started moving left and right, up and down, and in curved paths that almost looked circular at times. Some of the movements were quick, almost like short “shooting” motions, while still appearing coordinated movements, but still doing there own “thing”. Given how far away they seemed to be, the implied speed was extreme, even though the apparent motion itself looked controlled rather than chaotic.

After roughly 30 seconds to a minute of this behavior, both objects began moving upward again, and this time they gradually lost brightness until they completely disappeared.

Over the next two hours, we continued to notice similar star- or orb-like objects appearing repeatedly from roughly the same area of the horizon. These later objects behaved differently: they rose straight up and gradually faded until disappearing, without the strange lateral or circular motion seen earlier. Those later sightings could potentially be explained as satellites, but the first two objects did not behave in a way that matched anything I’m used to seeing in the night sky.

The reason I only managed to take a single photo is simple… I was standing there genuinely stunned, watching what was happening rather than immediately reaching for my camera.
