My father Paul Marceau Roberts and stepmother Cindy Anderson took a nice Viking vacation to Copenhagen – Denmark; Finland; Oslo – Norway; Stockholm – Sweden and Estonia. Of course, I had to bug my dad on what kind of paranormal stories that he may have gathered from this adventure. Fortunately, my dad had some spooky tales that come out of Oslo. My dad said Oslo is rich with paranormal activity. Oslo, Norway, has several reported haunted locations, with the most famous being Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle and former prison known for various ghost sightings. One of their most famous entities is a demon dog named Malcanisen. Then there are featureless women named Mantelgeisten who enjoy whispering in people’s ears. These faceless women also enjoy causing strange sensations that seem to only be felt by men. As you walk around Oslo and visit their old churches and sanatoriums, you may encounter shadow people who dart here and there. There is a ghostly hunchback that frequents the streets of Oslo. Now, let’s take a closer look at the Malcanisen and Mantelgeisten. See below:
Demon Dog Malcanisen
Malcanisen is the legendary, vengeful ghost dog haunting Norway’s Akershus Fortress in Oslo. It is said to be buried alive to guard the castle. If you are unfortunate and see this demon dog, you will die within three months, this is an imminent death that a person cannot avoid. The Malcanisen is an evil dog. The name Malcanisen actually means “vicious dog”. The Malcanisen brings fear to the people who encounter this creature. There are reports of ghostly sounds and apparitions, especially near where it was interred, bringing dread to soldiers and visitors alike. Legend has it, that during the castle’s construction in the late 1200s, a vicious dog was supposedly bricked into the walls near the Main Gate/Maiden Tower as a good luck charm and to warn of danger, a practice during this time period. After the dog died, its spirit became a malevolent entity, haunting the fortress and bringing terror. It’s seen as a fierce guardian, its presence feared by soldiers even more than enemy invaders. The Malcanisen is a dark legend of a cursed guardian dog whose appearance spells doom, making it a key part of Norway’s haunted history.
The Faceless Women Known as the Mantelgeisten
Mantelgeisten means “cloak ghosts”. These are famous apparitions at Norway’s haunted Akershus Fortress in Oslo, described as faceless women in long robes, emerging from darkness and vanishing back into it, representing the castle’s many spectral residents alongside the demonic dog Malcanisen. They appear as shadowy figures wearing full-length robes, often described as having no discernible facial features. They are seen moving silently from dark corners and disappearing back into the shadows, sometimes heading towards their chambers. Most frequently reported within Akershus Fortress, particularly near the Margaretasalen (Margaret Hall).
Akershus Fortress (Slott og Festning):
Considered Norway’s most haunted spot, it’s a hub for paranormal activity due to its history as a prison, with reports of disembodied voices, footsteps, and apparitions. The fortress has been a royal residence, military base, prison (housing notorious criminals), and site of executions, providing ample reason for spectral activity, say paranormal enthusiasts. Visitors and staff report cold spots, disembodied voices, footsteps, and feelings of being pushed. The fortress is the home of the Malcanisen and Mantelgeisten.
Nes Church Ruins:
An old church site rumored to host sinister spirits and mysteries. the Nes Church Ruins (Nes Kirkeruiner) in Norway are widely considered haunted, with many visitors reporting strange phenomena like unseen forces pushing them, electronic devices failing, sudden feelings of heavy pressure as if underwater, and sightings of shadowy figures, often attributed to the ghost of a priest, Jacob Christian Finckenhagen and his ghostly children. Jacob served as a priest from 1800 to 1837. People report feeling weighed down, moving as if through water, and experiencing physical pressure. Cameras, phones, and car electronics often stop working near the ruins. Visitors see unexplained lights, sounds, and shadows, with some feeling they are being pushed or shoved. Freja Johansson, a tourist felt shoved by unseen hands and thrown to the ground. Some legends suggest the spirits of children buried within the church walls also roam the ruins. Some say that Jacob may have died from old age, while other stories claim he tragically hanged himself from the church rafters. A darker story claims children were entombed behind the altar, adding to the spectral activity. Karl Persson, a local tourist encountered three ghostly children, two little boys and one little girl. The ghostly children ran up to him and all three placed their hands out, palms facing upwards, as if they wanted something. Karl got scared and backed off and the three ghostly children simply disappeared.
Old Lier Sanatorium:
An abandoned asylum near Drammen known for shadows, howls, and a persistent feeling of being watched. The Old Lier Sanatorium (officially Lier sykehus) in Norway is widely considered one of the most haunted locations in the country due to its dark history of medical malpractice and patient mistreatment. Visitors have reported seeing shadowy figures roaming the hallways and tunnels. A local tourist named Ingrid Berg and her lady friend Ebba Bjork walked past a room and witnessed a ghostly doctor holding a very sharp instrument. The doctor approached the two ladies and had a grin on his face. He then faded away. People have heard inhuman howling, disembodied voices, and the sound of slamming doors. Many people describe an intense, lingering feeling of sadness or a terrifying sensation of being watched. Before demolition, some rooms were found with walls covered in nail marks, which added to the site’s macabre reputation. The reputation for hauntings stems from the facility’s brutal past, such as illegal experiments that were conducted from 1946 to 1957. Hundreds of patients were reportedly subjected to unauthorized drug testing (including LSD and radioactive isotopes) and experimental medical procedures. It was one of Norway’s most active sites for lobotomy procedures, with thousands performed across the country during that era. Several buildings were abandoned in 1985 and left to decay. Many ghost hunters in the area say that the negative residual atmosphere remains, even though some buildings were demolished. Hugo Aberg and Liv Lindgren who belong to the now defunct O.S.S. (Oslo Shadow Seekers) obtained many EVPs of people screaming or crying for help. Liv stated that while she was doing her paranormal investigating, she felt the weight of a whole body grabbing her. She felt that whoever was grabbing her, did not want to let go and was seeking help.
Special Note:
Another area that my dad and Cindy visited was Stryn, Nordfjord (part of the former Sogn og Fjordane county, now Vestland county) and it’s believed to be haunted. The hauntings origin maybe due to tragic historical events. The idyllic Lovatnet Lake near Stryn was the site of two devastating tsunamis in 1905 and 1936, that was caused by mountain collapses, which killed a total of 135 people and destroyed communities. Locals have claimed that they have seen full body apparitions in this area. Then you have a nearby haunted hotel called the Hotel Union Øye, which is located by the scenic Norangsfjorden (not far from the Stryn area), is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a maidservant named Linda. Only guests with “nerves of steel” dare stay in the “Blue Room”. One local says while he slept in the Blue Room, the covers went over his face, and he was being suffocated. After squirming for a while in the bed, he managed to get the blankets off his face. Other parts of Norway have more prominent ghost stories, such as the “White Lady” at Fredriksten Fortress or the ghost of Peder Schumacher Griffenfeld at Munkholmen Island. I will talk more about this in my next article.
Special Note: When I traveled to Moscow, Russia with my best friend Jeffrey Scott Clifford, we flew over Norway, Sweden and Finland. We could clearly see many mountain ridges from the plane, especially flying over Sweden.
