DOLOMITE MOUNTAIN RANGE
The Adamello Brenta region, like much of the Dolomites mountain range, has a deep cultural heritage with many ancient tales. Let’s take a look at the region first, before we get into the esoteric history of this region. The Adamello Brenta region is famous for the Brenta Dolomites, which are a spectacular and unique part of the Dolomites mountain range, known for their jagged limestone peaks, and are protected within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park which is a UNESCO Global Geopark. The Dolomites take their name from the carbonate rock Dolomite. Dolomite was named after the 18th-century French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750–1801), who was the first to describe the mineral. I can only wonder if the Dolomite mineral attracts strange UFO/UAP phenomena?

UFO/UAP SIGHTINGS
There are reports on UFO/UAP sightings in the Dolomites, Italy, with recent social media buzz, as late as 2025 of seeing strange lights in the Dolomites mountain ranges that extend into the Adamello Brenta Natural Park. There is a Porsche driving video featuring a potential “UFO,” that is flying close to the Porsche. Lorenzo Marino mentions that he saw strange orbs flying in and out from the trees at the Adamello Brenta Natural Park and super bright lights emitting from the trees. Lorenzo believes that there was probably some kind of aerial object that was parked inside the tree line. UFOs/UAPs have been reported at the natural park and Dolomite mountain range for many years. There are historical reports of mysterious lights and objects in this area of Italy. This shows that the landscapes not only attract human tourists, but they also attract unconventional aerial phenomena. In December 1978, there was a UFO wave in this area. Italy experienced widespread UFO sightings, described as green, red, or white lights flying erratically, some of the UFO/UAPs had donut shapes, boomerang shapes and triangles. A few of the UFOs shot down beams of light, as if they were looking for something. The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are famous for their dramatic peaks (like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo) and unique beauty, making them prime locations for unusual sights, whether natural phenomena, mysterious drones, or potential unidentified objects.

ABANDONED VILLAGES
The park also contains abandoned medieval villages like Cerana and Irone, deserted due to the plague in the 1600s. These empty shells of former thriving communities create a “hollow feeling” and an “unsettling atmosphere” that lends itself to a general sense of spookiness and ghost town analogies. Visitors to the site have reported hearing mysterious whistling sounds. Some people have seen mysterious figures walking around an abandoned village and disappearing. Strange orbs are seen flying around the village and some of the orbs are seen shooting into the night sky. A visitor to a village saw a woman dressed in period clothing. This strange woman was trying to entice the visitor to follow her. The visitor stood his ground and was too afraid to follow this woman. He knew she was a ghost, because she was somewhat transparent and he could see through her. Finally, she just faded away into nothingness.

THE ANGUANES
There are other stories that originate from the Dolomites. People believe that there are mythical figures living in the Dolomite mountain range. A nymph-like Anguanes lives in the Dolomite mountain range and people believe she is a water goddess or witch. You are probably wondering what a Anguanes is. Anguanes are mythical, water-dwelling nymphs from Northern Italian folklore, often depicted as beautiful, cloven-footed women (like goats or ducks) with long breasts, living near springs and rivers, who act as guardians of nature, fertility helpers for women, and can be seductive or dangerous to men, representing a blend of pagan nature spirits and later Christianized figures like witches or mermaids. Legend has it that the Anguanes live with other mythical cryptids like dwarves, orgres and even dragons. Carlo Ricci mentions when he was hiking in the Dolomites mountain range, he saw at a distance a beautiful woman with long dark-hair and topless trying to get his attention and moving her hand and arm to let him know that she wanted him to meet up with her. As Carlo started approaching the woman, he noticed from the waist down she had the legs of a goat. Carlo freaked out and took off in the opposite direction. Carlo knew that he encountered the Anguanes.

GESTURING MEN TO COME CLOSER
It’s interesting how the Anguanes and the ghostly woman in the abandoned village were trying to gesture men to approach them or get closer. What would have happened if these men got closer?

THE GHOST OF BISHOP VIRGILIO
The area has a history marked by “raids, murders, assaults and struggles” between ancient noble families, and resistance to Christianization, which has produced legends such as the murder of Bishop Virgilio. Some visitors claim that they have seen the ghost of Bishop Virgilio walking around the park. While the park is primarily known for its stunning natural beauty, geology, and wildlife like brown bears and ibex, visitors interested in local folklore can explore these historical sites and ancient legends. The general atmosphere of the ancient, wild mountain landscape inspires many tales and stories.
