When I was stationed with the 501s Military Intelligence Battalion at Yongson Barracks in Seoul, Korea, I met my old Army buddy Corporal Jelani Maasai. Jelani was born in Kenya and is a Kenya-American citizen. Jelani joined the U.S. military after becoming a legal resident. I met Jelani at the Sportsman’s Club in Itaewon. To this day, I still communicate with Jelani. What is unique about Jelani is that he proclaims himself as a psychic medium. Jelani believes his ability to see and communicate with ghosts started back to his boyhood days in Kenya. Jelani tells me that certain areas of Kenya is cursed by evil spirits.
KENYA
The area around Salama in Laikipia, Kenya, has a reputation for being “haunted” or influenced by supernatural forces, particularly linked to frequent, tragic road accidents at a spot called Mlima Kiu, this is where locals blame evil spirits or occult practices for the crashes, though reckless driving is also cited. Many locals claim that these evil spirits will look like seductive beautiful women. These evil spirits are known by the locals as the Mlima Kiu Sirens. They will distract the driver causing an accident, or they will even appear in the back seat of your vehicle. Jelani tells me that his uncle was driving near the spot at Mlima Kiu and a beautiful woman was sitting in the back seat. This beautiful woman started touching Jelani’s uncle in a sensual way. Jelani’s uncle hit a tree, and his vehicle was totaled. Jelani was hospitalized with serious injuries. Fortunately, Jelani’s uncle recovered. Jelani tells me how he got the ability to see ghosts. Jelani tells me that he saw a bright glowing disc that was hovering over some giraffes and zebras. The giraffes and zebras looked like they were frozen, they were not moving. Jelani felt like he was paralyzed. This lasted for a couple of minutes and the glowing disc flew off at incredible speed. After this encounter, Jelani started seeing ghosts wherever he went. Jelani never mentioned it to his parents, in fear he would be considered as insane.
The Mlima Kiu Sirens that Jelani encountered seemed to be afraid of Jelani. Jelani was able to see these sirens. If he approached a siren, the siren would do everything to avoid Jelani. Some locals do not believe in these evil sirens. Some locals believe that rich, occult-practicing individuals in the area are behind the misfortunes. These individuals are suspected of cursing the area called Mlima Kiu. Many deaths have occurred at Mlima Kiu, such as fatal severe accidents, including fiery truck collisions and a bus plunging into a river, resulting in multiple deaths. Many of these unfortunate souls wander around the road, while the sirens look for new victims.
OJAI, CA
One of the first places that Jelani moved to with his parents, brothers and sisters is the city of Ojai, California. Ojai is widely considered one of the most haunted towns in Southern California, with a rich collection of local legends and paranormal reports centered around specific landmarks. When I was living in Anaheim, CA, I would visit a friend named Delan Nedstrom in Ojai. Delan took me to Creek Road, which is known as the “epicenter” of Ojai’s paranormal activity, this road is reportedly haunted by up to 15 ghosts. I went to Creek Road 3 times and never experienced anything. Jelani says that he did encounter a spirit of a young boy that seemed lost. When Jelani tried to communicate with the young boy, the young boy just faded away. Jelani says there is an entity named Char-Man. Char-Man is a famous local legend. Char-Man is described as a horribly disfigured spirit with charred skin who reportedly emerges from the brush near a bridge on Creek Road (often near Camp Comfort). Jelani says he had 3 friends that did a campout by the bridge and encountered Char-Man. One of his friends had 3 lightly burned fingers and that friend believes it was caused by Char-Man. Another legendary ghost is The Ghostly Bride. The Ghostly Bride is a woman in a white wedding dress. It is said that she hitchhikes along this road, sometimes appearing in the backseat of cars. Jelani says that there is some truth to this legend, because he has encountered a lady in white that he believes is the Ghostly Bride. Other stories on Creek Road are the Mischievous Midget. This midget is a little man about 2 feet-high and he looks for ways to cause trouble. If he has a chance to steal your car keys, he will. Then finally there is the Headless Motorcyclist. Legend tells of a rider who lost his head in a crash with a semi-truck and now scours the road looking for his skull.
OTHER HAUNTED LOCATIONS IN OJAI:
Nordhoff Cemetery:
Visitors have reported seeing a ghostly dog running among the headstones. Some visitors have witnessed strange moving mists. Jelani has seen many ghosts at this cemetery. Recent psychic investigations at the site claim to have contacted spirits of former residents.
Ojai Valley Inn:
Room 5 is notoriously rumored to be haunted by a ghost that bangs on the closet doors from the inside, often accompanied by a sudden foul odor. One guest saw the ghost of a chubby man with a white towel wrapped around his waist. The guest believes that the foul odor originates with this chubby man ghost, because when the chubby man ghost vanished, there was a lingering foul odor. According to the guest…”the chubby man ghost stinks!”
Ojai Village Pharmacy:
Located on Signal Street, workers have reported items flying off shelves and sightings of a woman in Victorian-era clothing. A former employee was grabbing a certain item from a shelf and felt a slight slap on top of his right hand. The former employee believes it was a slap from the Victorian dressed woman ghost.
Jasper National Park
Jelani went with his family on vacation to Jasper National Park. Jelani encountered many ghosts at this national park. Jasper National Park, located in the Canadian Rockies, is well known for local folklore and numerous ghost stories, particularly centered around the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. The park itself and various historical sites within it are subjects of local legends and organized ghost tours.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge:
Considered one of Canada’s most haunted places, the lodge and its various cabins are the source of numerous tales. When Jelani’s family stayed in one of the cabins, a few cabinet doors opened by themselves. Jelani detected 2 male ghosts and 1 female ghost in their cabin. They spent 3 days in this cabin and only one-night experienced paranormal activity. Jelani’s family heard disembodied footsteps throughout the night. The female ghost walked over to Jelani as he laid in bed. A window opened by itself. Disembodied whispering was heard through the night. Jelani says that the ghosts were harmless, but were definitely restless. This only happened for one-night, the other two nights, they did not have any disturbances. Jelani believes that the entities did not have enough energy on those two peaceful nights. Another ghost is the Point Cabin Maid. Jelani says that this famous story involves a chambermaid who tragically fell and broke her neck on the cabin’s steep staircase in the 1940s. Guests and staff report flickering lights, doors slamming shut, the distinct smell of cigar smoke, and feeling of a cold hand pushing them on the stairs. Some guests have encountered The Phantom Couple. Guests have occasionally reported seeing two elderly figures in vintage attire gracefully dancing in the ballroom to music only they can hear, a non-alarming presence that evokes nostalgia. Last, but not least is the The Bellman. Similar to a legend at the nearby Fairmont Banff Springs, some tales mention a silent bellhop who carries bags to rooms before vanishing. We have two ghostly Bell Men, one at Fairmont Banff Springs and the other one at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.
Other Hauntings at Jasper National Park
Villa Caruso Restaurant (now closed):
Staff at this former restaurant reported various paranormal encounters. One of the ghosts seen is the blonde lady in the pink dress. Some patrons have seen this lady inspecting the silverware. She will look over the silverware and then disappear. Local tours in the area mention “spooky water” sites within the park, involving stories of heartbroken ghosts and mysterious disappearances into underground caverns. In one watery location, a group of hikers encountered a woman crying by the water. As the group approached her, she turned around, looked at them and then disappeared.
