When I went on my Boston, Massachusetts vacation with my wife Deanna, we rented a car and drove all over the place. Somehow, I got lost and found myself driving on the freeway in the state of Vermont. The first thing that popped in my head was that we were lost and we need to make a quick u-turn and get back to Massachusetts! We had an appointment in Salem, Massachusetts for the Salem History Tour, in which I already paid for online. Fortunately, we made it to our destination. After I got home, I wanted to know more about Vermont. What were some of the historic haunted sites in Vermont? Well, this is what I found out.
The Equinox Resort (Manchester) was completed in 1769, this historic hotel is considered one of Vermont’s most haunted places. Housekeepers and staff have heard unexplained noises and experienced rapid changes in air temperature. Items have been reported to disappear from one place and reappear elsewhere, such as ice chests and chairs being found piled up like a pyramid. One documented incident involved a guest whose keys were found separated from their chain and scattered across the room after they briefly stepped out. Some staff have reported odd phenomena involving multiple scents on the third floor and in the south wing. The scents can be anything from various food smells or fragrant smells. One guest smelled rotten fish. There have been claims of furniture moving on its own. The resort was a popular summer getaway for the Lincoln family, and it’s said that the spirits of Mary Todd and one of her sons can be seen in the resort’s halls.
The Old Stagecoach Inn (Waterbury) was built in 1826, this inn is rumored to be haunted by several ghosts, including a former resident named Margaret Annette Henry Spencer, also known as Nettie. Daniel Wackenhut, a tourist from Syracuse, New York says that Nettie on one night was sitting on the foot of his bed, she was singing a lullaby. Daniel was frozen in fear and then he saw at the corner of his room a little red-haired girl in pigtails giggling. Daniel managed to get 2 words out, he said STOP IT! Both apparitions disappeared.
Hartness House Inn (Springfield) is a historic inn, built by inventor James Hartness. It has a spooky underground tunnel system. Visitors claim that objects disappear, reappear in different places, and that the electricity goes out for no reason. One of the most talked-about haunting stories involves the “Lindbergh Room.” Guests and staff have reported encounters with a ghostly presence in this room, which was named after pilot Charles Lindbergh, who was a personal friend of Hartness. The inn’s staff and guests have passed down stories of a general “resident ghost” that haunts the property. The paranormal energy is most commonly reported in the original mansion’s guest rooms. The underground tunnels were a strange and innovative project by James Hartness, who used them as a private office. The tunnels are also the rumored location of some of the inn’s haunting activity. A long-haired blonde woman in a green robe is sometimes seen floating around in the tunnels. A former employee of the inn says that the blonde-haired woman ghost is the former mistress of James Hartness. The tunnels lead to a telescope observatory designed by Hartness. The blonde-haired woman ghost has been seen by the observatory.
The Marble Mansion Inn (Fair Haven) is haunted. Guests have reported waking up to seeing a man in a gray suit at the foot of their beds. One child was terrified when the Man in the Gray Suit was looking down on him, while he laid in bed. The Man in the Gray Suit wasn’t smiling, not blinking his eyes, he was just staring at the child. When the child screamed, the apparition faded away. Then there are sounds of ghostly children running through the halls. One guest saw 3 ghostly children laughing running into an empty room. When the guest investigated, there were no children in the room.
The Norwich Inn (Norwich) was established in 1797, this inn is reportedly haunted by two ghosts. The first one is Mary, the wife of a former innkeeper who died in a fire. Guests and staff have experienced hearing footsteps, doors opening and closing, and sudden chills. Then the 2nd ghost is “Ma Walker,” a Prohibition-era conductor of an illegal alcohol train who remained at the inn after her death. The ghost is said to haunt the inn, with Room 21 being a favored spot for her presence.
The Quechee Inn at Marshland Farm (Quechee) is haunted by John and Jane Porter, who bought the house in 1845.
As you can see Vermont is a very haunted State. There are so many other places in Vermont that are haunted, like Emily’s Bridge (Stowe). This place is also known as Gold Brook Covered Bridge. This bridge is legendary, due to the haunting activity at this bridge. According to legend, a young woman named Emily was waiting at the bridge for her lover when he never arrived. In her despair, she jumped to her death. Visitors have reported hearing noises, seeing apparitions, and even having their cars scratched by her spirit. Dana Carter of El Paso, Texas heard splashing in the water, she looked down into the water and saw nothing that could have made that splash. Dana believes that was Emily. Then there is Wilson Castle (Proctor). This Victorian castle dates back to the 19th century, Wilson Castle has a long history of paranormal reports. Staff and visitors have reported seeing a variety of apparitions and other strange phenomena. Eddie Rochelli from New Hampshire encountered the Custodian Helmet Cop. Eddie says that it was a full body apparition of a 19th century police officer wearing a Custodian Helmet. This ghost was tapping the walls with his billy club (baton). Eddie thought it was an actor, only to see the apparition disappear as it approached him. Another haunted place is the Shelburne Museum (Shelburne). The Dutton House on the museum’s grounds is haunted by an elderly man and a young girl. Several people have reported seeing and hearing the ghostly figures. Some of the disembodied conversations are full paragraphs. Tourists say you can hear them talking, but can’t make out the words.
Last but not least is the Bennington Triangle, this is a place for mysterious disappearances and other strange paranormal phenomena. Some people say the Bennington Triangle has portals to other dimensions. There is also an unusual amount of UFO sightings at the Triangle. Then we have the University of Vermont (Burlington). Founded in 1791, the campus has a number of reportedly haunted buildings. For instance, Converse Hall is said to be haunted by a student ghost named “Henry,” who died by suicide in the 1920s. Another ghostly place is the Vermont Police Academy (Pittsford). This location was formerly a state hospital for tuberculosis patients. The ghost of a nurse named Mary, who is believed to have died of the disease, is said to haunt the premises. She will walk up to you and smile. If you want to see ghostly miners, stop by Glastonbury Ghost Town (Glastonbury): This abandoned logging town has been the site of numerous disappearances and ghostly apparitions appearing and disappearing. West Castleton (Rutland County) is a 1800s slate-mining town and is also haunted by ghostly miners. Disembodied screaming has also been heard at West Castleton.
