The Solomon Islands have a historic legacy with World War II. The islands were a major battleground during World War II, and the remnants of the war, including unexploded ordnance, continue to pose a threat and are a source of concern. Some may associate these physical reminders of war with a sense of unease or even supernatural presence. Many spirits have been seen moving about in these areas of war. Islanders have heard disembodied screaming. Islanders have also heard the sounds of explosions when there are no explosions occurring. There is a strong residual haunting in certain areas of the islands. The horrors of World War II still haunt the islands and the haunting will probably continue through eternity.

Skull Island is another island that full body apparitions have been seen roaming around. One islander claimed that he saw floating skulls. This island, with its collection of skulls from past headhunting practices, is a site of historical and cultural significance. Many islanders feel sadness, depression and dread when visiting Skull Island. A few islanders felt suicidal while visiting Skull Island. When they left Skull Island, everything went back to feeling normal again. Newspaper articles from the 1940s report that a specific island in the Solomons, called St. George Island, was reportedly abandoned due to local belief that it was haunted, with stories of disappearances and “hoodoo magical practice”. An islander that vanished went out to the beach area to fish for his family and never returned to his village. The villagers searched the whole island and never found the fisherman. It was believed he was cursed with nefarious hoodoo magic. Hoodoo practices can be used for both benevolent and malevolent purposes. While often associated with healing, protection, and attracting good fortune, Hoodoo also includes techniques for causing harm, such as curses, hexes, and spells to bring misfortune. The ethical use of Hoodoo, like any spiritual or magical practice, depends on the practitioner’s intentions. Islanders say that the missing fisherman was cursed for fishing on part of the island that was controlled by a family that practiced Hoodoo.

On Makira Island, mythology describes a spirit/creature called the Adaro. The Adaro is a ghost of the dead that can inhabit animals, trees, and rocks. There is another Adaro that is considered as a elemental spirit that is associated with forces of nature like the sea or rainbows. The Adaro are said to haunt the seas. Adaros are sometimes described as half-human, half-fish beings with gills and fins. They are sometimes depicted as malevolent, with tales of them attacking fishermen or causing illness and death. Islanders also believe in other non-human spirits inhabiting forests, seas, and skies, some benevolent, some malevolent, and others are capricious in nature. The islanders believe in “vengeful spirits”. Some myths describe vengeful spirits, also known as the “Aataro Wasi”, that are associated with violent deaths. These spirits are believed to seek revenge by harming humans, though some may transform into protective deities. The Aataro Wasi is known to create rogue waves or extreme storm waves that can sweep a person away into the ocean.

Sometimes the Solomon Islands are visited by the “Night Marchers” that come over from nearby American Samoa. These are spirits of ancient warriors who parade about at night. The Night Marchers are taken seriously by locals. The Night Marchers are described as appearing with torches, drums, and conch shells. Witnesses may also hear rhythmic chanting, stomping feet, and experience a heavy wind, along with bright torches and accompanying mist or fog. A foul, musky or sulfurous smell is sometimes reported. They are said to float a few inches off the ground.

Some protective spirits from World War II have warned certain islanders of unexploded ordnance (UXOs). These physical remnants of war pose a real and dangerous threat, serving as a reminder of the islands’ violent past. The protective spirits are usually identified as islander’s deceased family members.

SPECIAL NOTE: I flew over Solomon Islands when I was going to Auckland, New Zealand with my stepson Jason Randall Porter and ex-wife Patricia Mary Roberts.
