When my stepmother Cindy visited Serbia, she enjoyed the cities of Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis. Cindy says that Serbia has its share of spooky hotspots with intriguing stories, from ancient fortresses to abandoned hotels and even a mountain rumored to hold hidden Nazi gold. If you are looking for a three-headed demon, all you have to do is head over to the ruins of Trajan’s town on Cer mountain. Cindy says that many of the Serbian people believe in this myth. Then we have Avala Mountain near Belgrade where the Vukodlak (werewolf) has been seen. A local named Davor Borjan claims that the Vukodlak clawed his front door, wanting to come in. Avala Mountain is also rumored to have buried Nazi treasure. One of the strangest stories is that in 1987, strange lights were seen at Homolje Mountains and a family was terrorized by 8 Widgets (extraterrestrials). Their 8-year-old son was crying and ran back into the house, yelling that the Widgets were going to get him! These creatures were on the family’s roof and peeking through their windows. This incident lasted for about 2 hours and finally the lights went away and there were no more Widgets. Cindy received this information from a local/tourist named Milos Cavic, who knew the family. Cindy asked why they called the space beings “Widgets”? Milos says in broken English: “Is that not you call small people?” Cindy laughed and said: “you must be referring to midgets?” Milos agreed. Milos says that the family told him the creatures were 2 feet tall. Cindy described what the Widgets looked like according to Milos. Please see my crude drawing of a “Widget”.

Special Note: The Widget story reminds me of the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter, which occurred on August 21, 1955, in Kentucky. This Kentucky family was harassed and terrorized by extraterrestrial “goblins”. Widgets are described as having a cone shaped hat, 2-feet-tall, vertical slit eyes, razor sharp teeth. Now let’s take a look at some of the haunted locations in Serbia.

Trajan’s Town on Cer Mountain:
This ancient fortress is said to be inhabited by a mythological creature, Tsar Trajan, a sun-fearing demon with three heads and goat’s ears, according to the newspaper Balkan Insight. This story is a local myth and there are no confirmed sightings of this three-headed-demon.

Avala Mountain:
Legends say that Nazi forces hid stolen treasure on Avala Mountain during World War II, making it a site of mystery and potential treasure hunting. Nikola Cerovic, a hunter claims that he spied the Vukodlak (werewolf) in the tree line. Some locals say that on some nights, you can hear the Vukodlak letting out a blood curdling howl. In Slavic folklore, a Vukodlak (also spelled Volkodlak or Wilkołak) is a werewolf-like creature, often described as a monstrous being that embodies both human and animal traits. It’s a creature associated with curses, possession, or even divine punishment, transforming into a wolf-like form, particularly during the full moon, and becoming aggressive and dangerous.

Verengaria Hotel (Prodromos):
An abandoned hotel where a newlywed bride allegedly drowned herself in the swimming pool after discovering her husband making love to the maid. Some tourists have heard sobbing and crying. Another tourist saw this ghostly woman looking in the grass, like she lost something. Other locals say her ghost can be seen in the pool at night, according to a Reddit thread.

Skull Tower (Niš):
Skull Tower is a stone structure embedded with human skulls located in Niš, Serbia. It was constructed by the Ottoman Empire following the Battle of Čegar of May 1809, during the First Serbian Uprising. Tourists and locals have felt extreme cold spots. Some people hear disembodied whispering and moaning. One tourist complained that she felt an icy cold hand on the back of her neck.

New Cemetery (Belgrade):
This cemetery, known for its architectural design, is also a place of rich Serbian history and may evoke a sense of the macabre for some. David Henson, an American tourist was visiting the cemetery with his wife. David claims that a ghostly hand came out of the grave and grabbed his wife’s ankles. After this happened, they left immediately.

Nis Fortress:
A fortress with a long history of battles and occupations, it is surrounded by monuments and memories of war, which can be seen as a source of unsettling energy. Cindy says that the air is thick with depression and the thickness is so great, you could cut it with a knife. Some people have heard screaming in the background and other people have seen full body apparitions of soldiers.

Homolje Mountains:
This area is known for stories of “Vlach magic” and rituals involving the dead, including potential posthumous marriages and dancing on graves. Vlach magic, also known as “Vlaska Magija”, is a form of spiritual practice and folklore associated with the Vlach ethnic minority in eastern Serbia. It incorporates pre-Christian, Paleo-Balkan, and Indo-European elements alongside Orthodox Christian beliefs. Vlach magic is characterized by rituals involving streams, rivers, and forests, and it includes both “white magic” (beneficial) and “black magic” (malicious). The Vukodlak (werewolves) has been spotted in these mountains too. Some people belief that black magic was conducted at the Homolje Mountains and brought on the Vukodlak. It is believed that evil witches and warlocks summoned these werewolf creatures. It is also believed that there have been human sacrifices conducted for the Vukodlak.
