When I went to Seattle, Washington, I took the tour of the Seattle Underground, hoping to run into some ghosts. The Seattle Underground is widely known for being haunted, with numerous ghost stories and tour guides claiming to encounter paranormal activity. The tunnels, which were once the heart of downtown Seattle, are believed to be inhabited by the spirits of those who once lived and worked there. I learned the Seattle Underground’s history is intertwined with tales of violence, fire, and the spirits of those who never left. Many visitors and tour guides report seeing strange figures, hearing unexplained noises, and experiencing eerie sensations within the tunnels. One lady in front of me claimed that her hair was being tugged on. She first thought I did it and I looked at her and said…”wasn’t me!” Certain areas within the Underground, like the old bank vault and a former brothel, are particularly known for paranormal activity. A popular story told by the tour guide is that a bank teller was killed in a shootout and his ghost is seen walking around the Underground. The “Banker Ghost” is also seen looking at his pocket watch. Then you have the spirits of sex workers who frequented the tunnels. A psychic from Seattle claims she has talked to the spirit of a sex worker known as Darling Dash. The psychic says that Darling Dash does not remember how she died. The tour was interesting and unfortunately, I did not experience any paranormal activity. My last stop was the Seattle Space Needle and then it was time to go home.

When I was flying back home, the Captain said if we look out the left side window, we could see Mount Rainier. Mount Rainier looked so majestic and magical. I only wish I had more time to explore the state of Washington. Little did I know, I would be assisting a Washington Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officer. I am retired from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and one of my jobs at Fish and Wildlife is being a “Custodian of Records”. I was contacted by a Washington Enforcement Officer that needed records on a hunter that was known to hunt in California and the State of Washington. The hunter had broken numerous laws and was now being sought out. As I was helping this Officer, I discussed my trip to Seattle. I disclosed to the Officer that I was a paranormal investigator and wanted to investigate the paranormal activity at Mount Rainier. The Officer told me he has heard so many crazy stories from fisherman, hunters, campers, hikers at Mount Rainier. Here are some of the stories the Officer told me. I am not going to disclose the Officer’s name, as I don’t wish for any problems for said Officer.

The Officer talked with a hunter who made claim, that two years ago, when he was hunting, he saw at a distance of 300 yards a “grey” type of alien and behind the alien stood a Bigfoot. The alien and Bigfoot stared at the hunter for a few seconds and then scampered off. The hunter was scared to death and hiked back to his vehicle, but before he reached his vehicle, he saw a huge nest near a tree. 3 days later, the hunter brought 3 of his friends to the location, so he could show them the nest. When they arrived at the site, the nest was gone and his friends thought he was making up the story. The hunter felt comfortable in telling the Officer the story, because another hunter had recently told the Officer about seeing a glimpse of what he thought was Bigfoot.

MOUNT RAINIER GOATMAN?
The last story the Officer told me is that a hiker made claim that in June of 1998 he came across a cryptid crossing the hiking trail and the cryptid had the head of a goat, bipedal and had cloven hoofs. The fur on this cryptid was dull white and some black patches on the face of the creature. The Officer assured me that the hiker was not drinking when he told the Officer the story.

Mount Rainier is known for several paranormal occurrences, including ghostly footsteps on the Camp Muir Trail, the legend of Tahoma, the spirit of the mountain, and of course UFO sightings. The stories below have been collected by many people from the State of Washington and elsewhere. Let’s go over some of the legends.

CAMP MUIR TRAIL AND THE LEGEND OF TAHOMA
Camp Muir is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Tahoma, who is said to consume explorers and trap them in a cave-like stomach. Hikers have reported hearing ghostly footsteps, which disappear when they turn to look. The Nisqually tribe’s legend says Tahoma is the spirit of Mount Rainier, and she is believed to be a potential threat to mountaineers.

FAMOUS UFO SIGHTING
In 1947, Kenneth Arnold, a private pilot, claimed to have seen nine unidentified flying objects near Mount Rainier, sparking the modern fascination with UFOs and leading to the popularization of the term “flying saucer”. Arnold’s sighting, which involved objects described as “flying like a saucer would,” was widely reported and fueled a wave of other UFO sightings across the United States. Washington state has the second-most UFO sightings in the U.S., with over 7,000 reported sightings, according to an Auburn Reporter article.

ELEVEN GHOSTLY CLIMBERS
Mount Rainier is known for various paranormal activity reports, including ghostly encounters and mysterious phenomena. The most well-known is the 1981 avalanche on the Ingraham Glacier that killed 11 climbers, with some reporting voices and strange shapes seen on the glacier around the anniversary of the event. Other reports include ghostly figures, whispers, and a feeling of being watched, particularly at the Paradise Inn. Additionally, there are stories of a ghostly cloud at Reflection Lake and a hooded figure seen near the treeline, causing intense fear in those who witnessed it.

THE GHOSTS OF PARADISE INN
THE INTELLIGENT WATCHFUL CLOUD
& THE HOODED FIGURE

Some believe the ghosts of those who lost their lives on Mount Rainier reside at the Paradise Inn, where guests report feelings of being watched and unusual noises. After the 1981 avalanche, some hikers have reported hearing voices and seeing strange shapes glinting off the sun on the Ingraham Glacier, especially near the anniversary of the event. A story on Fodors Travel Guide describes a low, shimmery cloud that moved with them, with no sound, and the feeling of being watched.
A Reddit user posted about taking a picture of a Hooded Figure near the treeline, which caused them and their friend to feel ill, scared, and have vivid dreams afterward. There are also stories of strange noises, a feeling of being watched, and other unexplained phenomena occurring in various parts of the park.

MISSING AND STRANGE DISAPPEARANCES
At least 400 people have gone missing in Mount Rainier National Park since 1989, and their disappearances remain unsolved. This number includes cases where remains have been found, but the cause of death or disappearance remains unclear.
