I’ve driven through Indiana, on my way to Fort Knox, Kentucky, back in 1982. Unfortunately, I was on a deadline to report for my new duties as an Army Instructor at Fort Knox, so I had no time to investigate any haunted locations in Indiana. But, I do have some good news, I have an old Army buddy named Mike Summerson who is from Indiana. Mike’s hobby is being an independent ghost hunter and Mike provided me with his 6 favorite places to ghost hunt in Indiana. Let’s look at Mike’s 6 favorite haunt spots!
Tunnelton Road, Guthrie Township, Lawrence County, Indiana
One of the most haunted tunnels in Indiana is the Tunnelton Tunnel. Some locals refer this tunnel as the “Big Tunnel”. This tunnel was built in 1859. Legend has it that a railway worker lost his head during a construction accident. Many locals have seen the headless worker walking around inside the tunnel. Some people say that in one hand he is carrying a lantern, the other hand is carrying his head. Mike said that he took some pictures of the tunnels and captured some orbs in his photos, but orbs can be anything, and Mike feels the orbs are merely dust. Some people believe that when the tunnels were built, they ignored the fact that a cemetery was on the topsoil. As the workers continued building the tunnel, the cemetery collapsed into the tunnel. Now the ghosts of this cemetery haunt the tunnels. Mike talked with Katie Lens, an Indiana resident and she claims that she has heard moaning noises inside the tunnel.
The Nicholson House, Indianapolis, Indiana
Address: 1500 N Delaware Street, Indianapolis, Indiana
In 1997, the Nicholson House was moved to a safe location for preservation purposes. The house is now a local landmark. When the mansion was moved, a local reporter took a photo and in one of the windows, a full body apparition can be seen looking out of the window. No one was in the house at the time the photo was taken. Locals have heard knockings on the wall, disembodied footsteps, screams, the smell of decaying or burnt flesh. Some people even claim they have seen blood run down the walls and then the blood just disappears. Mike believes that the people who have claimed that blood was running down the walls, may have been influenced by horror movies. Blood running down the walls is a good theme used in horror movies, like the Amityville Horror. Stories are told of a former resident that committed suicide in this house. The smell of burning flesh is believed to be former slaves who were part of the Underground Railroad. The slaves were hiding out in the basement, the basement caught fire and some of the slaves were burned alive. Mike says that there was an unusual smell, and it did smell like burnt flesh or decaying flesh. Mike said the smell lasted for a few seconds and then the smell went away.
The University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana
Address: Notre Dame, Indiana
Students from this prestigious university have been haunted by unseen hands slamming doors, odd noises like the sounds of people choking. Mike talked with 3 students from this university and one of the students named Daniel says he has heard disembodied footsteps. Daniel on one day, found mysterious scratches on his arm. The most active spot on campus is Washington Hall. Local legend says the hall is haunted by George Gipp, a former Notre Dame football player who died on school grounds in 1920. Not only is George active, but he can also get quite aggressive, allegedly pushing students in the back. Daniel thinks that George Gipp may have scratched him. George Gipp is the man behind the phrase “Win one for the Gipper.” Columbus Hall is another location known for scary phantoms. Students see shadow people, hear odd noises. The shadow people will appear and disappear. Sometimes the shadow people will move around corners at lightning speed. The ghosts who roam around this area are said to be the spirits of Native Americans, as the hall itself is supposedly built on an ancient Potawatomi burial ground. Some students have mentioned that they hear distant sounds of drumbeats. Laura and Susan who are students, have seen a ghost with a yellow face. Laura mentions that a student opened a broom closet and Yellow Face popped out and scared the student so bad, the student had to take some time off to recover from the shock of seeing the ghost known as Yellow Face.
Fox Hollow Farm
Fox Hollow Farm is off 156th Street in Westfield.
The 18-acre property is the site of Herb Baumeister’s 1996 murders.
Property once owned by the late serial killer Herbert Richard Baumeister. Herbert was also the prime suspect of being the I-70 Strangler. At the Fox Hollow Farm, police dug up eleven men that Herbert had killed. This area is very haunted. The property is haunted by the victims of this crazed serial killer. Apparitions have been seen roaming the property. Screams have been heard. Gurgling noises, like someone is choking on their own body fluids. Mike obtained an EVP of someone hacking and coughing.
The Willard Library, Evansville, Indiana
Address: 21 N 1st Avenue, Evansville, Indiana
The Willard Library, incorporated in 1881, is the oldest library in Indiana. It’s also considered as one of the most haunted places in Indiana. Employees and visitors to the library have reported ghostly encounters dating back to the 1930s.
The most well-known resident apparition is The Gray Lady. She’s been spotted throughout the library, including inside an elevator, basement hallways, and among the stacks. Mike says he captured an EVP of a woman saying: “The Library of Alexandria exists!” Mike believes this is The Gray Lady.
Avon Haunted Bridge, Avon, Indiana
Address: Near County Road 625 East, Avon, Indiana
People have seen full body apparitions on this bridge. They have also heard the sounds of crying. Legend has it that a rail worker died drunkenly stumbling into wet cement during the bridge’s construction. Then there was the case of a slipping accident happening off the tracks, the victims were a young mother and her sick baby, as they fell to their deaths. Several workers fell off the track into the White Lick Creek and died. These workers still haunt the bridge. Mike did not get any EVPs and there were no anomalies in his photos. Mike did not experience anything he would consider as paranormal on this bridge, just a lot of stories.
