Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District. The Matale District is near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The majestic beauty of this mountain, that goes straight up into the sky is breath taking to look at. It’s a massive column of granite and it stands at the height of 590 feet. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle called the Cūḷavaṃsa, this area was a large forest, then after storms and many landslides it became a hill and was selected by King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) for his new capital. The King built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure, which is called Sigiriya: the Lion Rock. There had been a lot of deaths at the royal palace, and there have been a lot of death in and around Sigiriya. Locals have seen ghostly Buddhist monks walking around the palace grounds. The reason is because the capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king’s death. It was later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Locals have heard unearthly chanting coming from the Lion Rock.

Sigiriya is filled with history. Some of that history is dark. It is believed that Sigiriya was inhabited since prehistoric times. There is clear evidence that the many rock shelters and caves in the vicinity were occupied by Buddhist monks and ascetics from as early as the 3rd century BC. To this day ghostly monks are seen walking around. The earliest evidence of human habitation at Sigiriya is the Aligala rock shelter to the east of Sigiriya rock, indicating that the area was occupied around 3000 BC during the Mesolithic Period. Strange shadow figures are seen walking into caves or walking out of caves. According to my uncle Jose Causing – Merchant Marine, he heard about a wall that emits sounds like a man screaming, a man coughing, a man moaning. Some of my uncle’s shipmates that visited the Lion Rock have heard these screams, coughing and moaning. The sounds are believed to be King Dhatusena. Prince Kashyapa who is the son of King Dhatusena murdered his father by walling him up alive. King Dhatusena bound by his hands and feet, walled up alive, must have gone through extreme agony and torment. Tied up, unable to move and starving. What a horrible death. Murdered by his own son. Some locals have heard the words….”mata udaw karanna”, coming from a wall, which means “help”.

Moggallana who has royal blood felt that the Lion Rock should fall under his ownership. Moggallana fled to India to escape being assassinated by Kashyapa, but vowed revenge. In India he raised an army with the intention of returning and retaking the throne of Sri Lanka, which he considered to be rightfully his. Expecting the inevitable return of Moggallana, Kashyapa is said to have built his palace on the summit of Sigiriya as a fortress as well as a pleasure palace. Moggallana finally arrived, declared war, and defeated Kashyapa in 495 AD. During the battle Kashyapa’s armies abandoned him and he committed suicide by falling on his sword. Locals have seen phantom soldiers, sword fighting around the land of The Lion Rock. Prince Kashyapa spirit is also seen walking around slowly, with his head looking down towards the ground in shame.
