My wife Deanna and I, would at times work as “carny(s)” at the NorCal Celtic Festival / Scottish Festival in Woodland, CA for the fun of it, along with getting some extra spending cash. Our boss was Nancy Williams. Nancy would travel in this big white van filled with Celtic goodies. Nancy was known for her Ms. Morrison Shortbread that everyone seemed to love. Nancy was from New Mexico and one day Deanna tells Nancy that she wants to visit New Mexico. Nancy says…”why? There is nothing but dirt!” I have been to New Mexico 4 times and basically Nancy is correct, there is nothing but dirt out there, as far as you can see. Driving through New Mexico is the first time I saw a tornado funnel in the clouds. The tornado never touched ground, which was a good thing for me. I have seen a lot of dirt devils in New Mexico also. As a little boy, I went to Billy the Kid’s grave site. In 1998, I went to Roswell to visit the Roswell Museum. Besides Billy the Kid’s gravesite and the Roswell Museum, there is much more things to see. New Mexico is a paranormal visitor’s smorgasbord. In this article, I will talk about 4 haunted places in New Mexico. There are many other haunted places in New Mexico and perhaps that will be for another article. For now, let’s look at the four that I picked out:
Hotel Parq Central
Tourists love Albuquerque’s classy Hotel Parq Central and its fabulous rooftop cocktail lounge. While the tourists are enjoying their margaritas, little do they know that the Hotel Parq has a dark haunted history. The Hotel Parq went through a big renovation with luxury accommodations. The Hotel Parq Central has a sordid history. It was once a hospital and psychiatric facility. Tourists have complained about seeing ghostly apparitions. Former patients of the hospital claim that during their stays, they heard disembodied voices. Tourists have seen objects being moved by invisible forces. Many reports have come in, in which tourists say that they feel like they are constantly being watched. One tourist says that she saw a little girl apparition walking a big black dog down the hallway. The little girl looked at the tourist and said…”do you want to pet my dog?” The dog was snarling. Then the little girl and the dog just disappeared.
La Fonda
The inn has been around for 400 years and there are stories galore about the paranormal activity that happens at this inn. In 1857 a horrible murder happened. A possible cheating gambler that was for a short time lucky, was winning money. Then things turned to the worse, and a lynch mob that was tired of his good fortune took him from the gambling hall and hung him in the hotel’s backyard. Today, this patio has been enclosed and is the site of the hotel’s La Plazuela restaurant. Legend has it that tourists and guests have seen what appears to be the shadow of a man swinging from a tree while dining there. Ten years later, territorial justice was moved from the courthouse to La Fonda’s lobby when the Honorable John P. Slough, Chief Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court, was shot there. Guests claim they have sighted the judge, in his long black coat, wandering the hotel today. The judge usually has his head down and is sweating profusely from his forehead. A young bride, who was murdered on her wedding night by a jealous ex-lover, is also said to haunt the wedding suite. At the bar, some guests have seen a ghostly cowboy pull up a chair and sit at the bar for a minute and then vanish. Another apparition is “Hot Lips”, a former prostitute that is seen walking the streets. She is called “Hot Lips” because she has placed excessive red lipstick on her lips. She will wink at you and then disappear.
KiMo Theater
In 1951, a water heater exploded in the theater, killing several people, including a six-year-old named Bobby. Bobby is now a mischievous ghost. It’s tradition for performers at the KiMo to leave Bobby a small gift or treat. The treat he likes the most are donuts. Performers make sure to give Bobby the Ghost the treats first or he will cause havoc at the performance. He supposedly messes with the electricity, opens and closes doors repeatedly, and drops cables and other equipment from the ceiling in order to distract the performers and make them forget their lines. Bobby will also tip over your popcorn and you can hear his giggle, as the popcorn is thrown on the floor. In the theater there is another ghost, known as “Shadow Man”. Shadow Man will sit in a back seat and watch the performance. He is a complete full body shadow.
Plaza Hotel
The Plaza Hotel is next to the lush green forests and fields which are about an hour north of Santa Fe. Las Vegas, New Mexico (not to be confused with Las Vegas, Nevada) is a picturesque town that’s been featured in movies and TV shows like Red Dawn, No Country for Old Men, Easy Rider, and Longmire. It also has a creepy claim to fame. if you visit the hotel book Room 310 and you might encounter the past owner Byron T. Wells. The Plaza Hotel has been around since 1882. Room 310 as also at one time Byron’s office and people feel his presence in that room. If you are hanging out at the Byron T. Wells bar, you might get a visit by Lola Belinski, a female ghost that is lonely and looking for company. If you act like you are not scared of her and actually make conversation with you, she will follow you to your room. Supposingly, this has happened once to one male guest, and he regretted it. He left his room and never returned. Where he went, no one knows for sure.
