In 1987, when I got out of the Army, I needed to find a job. I went to Manpower, and they sent me all over the place to work. A fantastic temporary job was with Aerojet Rocketdyne. I worked at Aerojet for 2 weeks. What was memorable about Aerojet was that there were two haunted locations near our building. At lunchtime, I would head over to the American River, which was about 20 minutes away. Roughly 10.1 miles away via US-50E. That would be a great place for my co-workers and I, to get away from the stress of work and have a nice picnic. While eating our lunch, it would be nice to see the rapidly flowing American River. I had a secret agenda on why I would want to eat my lunch by the river. The reason being is that some of my co-workers have told me that sometimes when they walk the trails near the river, they will hear disembodied footsteps behind them. They turn around and there is no one there. Some co-workers even mentioned that they have heard whispering in their ears. In 2007, I went back to that same location, this time equipped with ghost hunting gear. I did manage to get an EVP of a man saying…”please watch your step”. It would make sense for a ghost to say something like that, because the trail to the river was sort of steep with jagged rocks along the trail.
As long as I can remember, there have been multiple deaths in the American River near Rancho Cordova, California. Just recently there has been drownings in June 2024 and another in August 2024. In August 2024, a 32-year-old man from Hayward drowned in the American River near Rancho Cordova on Saturday, August 5, 2024. The man, Kelvin Manabat Felarca, was not wearing a life jacket when he went under the water near the El Manto River Access, also known as Clay Banks. His body was recovered about 100 yards downstream by a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office dive team.
Then in June 2024, a teenager’s body was recovered from the American River near Rancho Cordova on Wednesday morning, June 26, 2024. The teen went missing after jumping into the water the afternoon before. The American River can be dangerous due to strong currents, cold water, and trees along the banks. These are recent deaths. Deaths at the American River has been going on for hundreds of years. Before settlers arrived, the South Fork of the American River was home to the Nisenan Indians, who lived in the Yuba, Bear, and American river watersheds. Over three quarters of the Valley Nisenan died in the malaria epidemic of 1833. The Hill Nisenan were destroyed by the Gold Rush. Though there were some hard-fought battles, a vigilante army calling themselves the Placer Blades annihilated almost all the Bear and American River Nisenan. People have heard chanting and drumbeats near the river. During one of my investigations, I heard distant drumbeats. The American River even has a famous ghost known as the Paradise Beach Ghost that wanders around Paradise Beach looking sad and only wearing shorts. Many locals say he is a drowning victim.
Even Aerojet may be haunted now, since recently there have been injuries and one death that I know about. A former worker of Aerojet says that in 2016, he witnessed a stapler slide to one part of the desk by itself. There have been accidents at Aerojet facilities, most notably a significant explosion in 2013 at their California plant which resulted in one employee fatality and another injured. During my time at Aerojet, I never witnessed any paranormal activity. Some history about Aerojet. The Aerojet General Corporation was founded in 1942 during World War II, as a rocket propulsion manufacturer for the U.S. government. In the following decades, the company expanded its operations in Rancho Cordova, CA, and became one of the leading defense and aerospace contractors in the United States. Aerojet is located at:
Aerojet Rocketdyne
2001 Aerojet Road
Rancho Cordova 95742
Also, near Aerojet is the now closed haunted Mather Air Force Base. All military bases are haunted, due to numerous training accidents that have resulted in death. Military bases just like your cities, have suicides, murders and accidental deaths. I have been to Mather AFB a few times and captured many EVPs. One of my investigators captured a strange mist by a barrack’s window. The mist almost had the shape of a human body. We were not able to recreate the image and have no explanation for the appearance of the mist. Another investigator felt 3 taps on her shoulder. She turned around and no one was there. I would say Mather AFB and the American River are very haunted locations in the Greater Sacramento Area.
