Hiking North and Middle Sugarloaf in the White Mountains
North and Middle Sugarloaf are two of the best short hikes in the White Mountains when it comes to views for the effort. From the Sugarloaf Trailhead on Zealand Road, this moderate out-and-back hike follows a pleasant forest trail, climbs through glacial boulders and rocky terrain, and reaches two open summits with wide views across Zealand Notch and the surrounding White Mountains.
At roughly 4 miles round-trip with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain, the Sugarloafs make a great half-day hike near Route 302. North Sugarloaf offers a beautiful overlook, while Middle Sugarloaf is the main destination, with broad open ledges and one of the best summit views for a hike of this length.

Starting from Zealand Road
The hike begins at the Sugarloaf Trailhead on Zealand Road, a seasonal road accessed from Route 302. In the warmer months, hikers can drive across the Zealand River bridge and park near the trailhead. Zealand Road is normally closed to vehicles in winter, which adds extra road-walking distance, so it is always worth checking conditions before heading out.
From the parking area, walk across the Zealand River and look for the signed Sugarloaf and Trestle Trails on the right. The first section stays close to the rocky riverbed and offers a gentle start through the forest.
At the first signed junction, turn left onto the Sugarloaf Trail. The Trestle Trail continues along the river, while the Sugarloaf Trail begins heading uphill toward the two summits.
Climbing Toward the Sugarloafs
The Sugarloaf Trail starts with a moderate climb through the forest, with a few easier stretches mixed in along the way. As the trail gains elevation, the terrain becomes rockier and more rugged, with roots, boulders, and uneven footing that are typical of White Mountains hiking.
One of the more interesting parts of the climb is the collection of large glacial erratics scattered through the woods. Some of these boulders are big enough to explore around, and a few small caves and openings give the trail a little extra character before the steeper upper section.
Higher up, the trail steepens and climbs a rocky staircase toward the signed junction between North and Middle Sugarloaf. This is where the hike begins to feel more like a true mountain outing, even though the overall distance is relatively short.
At the junction, North Sugarloaf is about 0.3 miles to the right, while Middle Sugarloaf is about 0.4 miles to the left. Both are worth visiting, and the extra mileage is small compared to the views you get from each summit.
North Sugarloaf
North Sugarloaf is the shorter of the two side trips and makes a great first stop. The trail climbs through the forest before reaching open ledges with excellent views toward Middle Sugarloaf, Mount Hale, Zealand Notch, and the surrounding mountains.
The ledges are broad enough to feel like a proper summit, and the view gives you a good preview of what is still to come on Middle Sugarloaf. It is a great place to take a quick break before returning to the junction and continuing toward the second peak.
Middle Sugarloaf
From the junction, head toward Middle Sugarloaf. The trail rolls through the forest before making its final climb to the summit. A wooden staircase helps hikers reach the upper ledges, where the trees open up to reveal the biggest view of the day.
Middle Sugarloaf is the highlight of the hike. The open summit ledges provide wide views across the White Mountains, including Zealand Notch, Mount Hale, and nearby ridges and peaks. It is easy to see why this mountain is included on the New Hampshire 52 With a View list.
The summit is a great place for a snack, lunch, or a longer break before heading down. The ledges are exposed, though, so be prepared for wind and changing weather even on an otherwise warm day.
Returning to Zealand Road
After spending time at Middle Sugarloaf, return to the junction between the two summits and descend the Sugarloaf Trail the way you came. The return trip follows the same rocky staircase, glacial boulders, and forest trail back toward the Zealand River.
At the lower junction, turn right to follow the riverside trail back to the Sugarloaf Trailhead. The descent is straightforward, but the rocky footing can still be slippery when wet or icy, so take your time.
Why This Hike Is Worth It
North and Middle Sugarloaf are proof that a White Mountains hike does not need huge mileage or a massive elevation gain to feel like a complete mountain day. In about 4 miles, you get a scenic river start, a steady climb, glacial boulders, two summits, and open ledge views that are much bigger than the effort required to reach them.
This hike is popular for a reason, especially during summer weekends and fall foliage season. If you want a quieter experience, start early or hike on a weekday.
For hikers visiting the Zealand Notch, Crawford Notch, or Franconia Notch area, North and Middle Sugarloaf should be high on the list. It is a moderate hike with excellent views, interesting terrain, and one of the best effort-to-reward ratios in the White Mountains.
