Helpful Tips Before Hiring a Contractor

What do you need to know before hiring a contractor?

There are two things right off the bat. First, if your area has been hit by a natural disaster (we are approaching tornado season in my part of the country), NEVER use a random non local contractor! I have seen so many horror stories from guys that never completed the work or did a horrible job and the home owner had to pay out more money to have another company fix their mistakes.

Second, get referrals and multiple bids. Just because your friend, family, co-worker or neighbor recommends someone, it doesn’t mean you will work well together or it might just be that their project was the contractors specialty. Your home is your most  valuable investment so you want to take your time deciding who to hire.

So, those are the two basic starting points but once you have it narrowed down, what’s next? Personally I want to know how long they’ve been in business. I’m all for helping a new kid on the block but they may not have enough experience yet. You also want to make sure they are properly licensed and insured. Don’t just ask, get proof! You also want someone that knows the regulations for your area so that they can get the required permits you will need for your project.

You will also want to know they expected timeline. Granted things can come up, especially if it is an outdoor project where weather can be a factor but you want to know how long you will be working around let’s say a torn up bathroom or kitchen. Believe me, I know you are excited to get your project done but you want it done right and it will feel much longer that it is when you’re excited. Not to mention, the whole house will “feel” like it’s a mess when you are undergoing renovations. However if they are running behind you will want to know why and the estimated time delay. Communication between you and the contractor is VERY important!

Remember, a legitimate contactor will NEVER ask for all of the money upfront!!!

You will also want to make sure they leave your property in pristine condition when they are through and that your property is respected and secure at all times during their time with you.

Make sure you have a way to resolve any issues and if there are any warranties with the supplies and the job performed. You will want to have copies of everything too.

Do your homework and I’m sure you will find the perfect solution to your renovation needs.
