“Inmate” Struck From Newspeak Dictionary
Criminals rank prominently among the identity groups liberals are most eager to pander to. Last Wednesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani even watched a soccer game at Rikers Island to demonstrate solidarity with the inmates. Hold on; I’m not supposed to say “inmates.” That word might stigmatize.
The New York Post reports:
New York City’s jails watchdog is set to go woke — scrapping the words “inmate” and “inmates” from its rule book and replacing them with “people in custody” or “person in custody.”
The proposed rule change for the Board of Correction swaps the words “inmate” or “inmates” with “people in custody” or “person in custody” more than 300 times.
Criminal justice advocates claim that “inmates” a derogatory term for incarcerated criminal defendants or convicts.
By “criminal justice advocates,” they mean “criminal advocates.”
It’s not just the Board of Correction:
Gov. Kathy Hochul approved a law in 2022 that strikes the word “inmate” in state law, replacing it with “incarcerated individual.”
A press release from Hochul proclaimed that the words “felon, inmate, prisoner, and convict dehumanize individuals and perpetuate the idea that incarcerated people should be permanently demonized and stigmatized.”
Next after destigmatization comes elevation. The loftiest status in a society run by liberals is that of victim. Soon “person in custody” and “incarcerated individual” will be replaced by “person oppressed by our fundamentally racist system of injustice.” It rolls right off the tongue.
