Irmo Town Council approves contract to add more Flock cameras despite opposition
IRMO, S.C. (WIS) – Irmo Town Council voted Tuesday night to expand its network of Flock license plate reading cameras, approving a $403,000 contract in a 4-1 vote despite pushback from residents concerned about data privacy and misuse.
The town currently has 11 Flock cameras installed across Irmo, in place for nearly four years. The approved contract would add 22 more. Town officials said the funding will come from Irmo’s general funds.
The topic drew more than 10 residents to the podium during Tuesday’s meeting. At least one person was removed from the meeting as discussion grew heated.
“I believe a free society should be reluctant to normalize the routine surveillance of ordinary people who are not suspected of any wrongdoing. The question before you isn’t just whether this technology can be useful; it’s also whether it produces the kind of relationship we want between government and the people it serves,” said resident Evan Altman.
Another resident questioned whether the technology was necessary.
“Is Irmo such a dangerous place that current law enforcement tools are not sufficient to keep the citizens safe without the use of this dangerous and controversial technology?”
Other residents are standing in support of the cameras, citing safety concerns.
“The reason we have cameras in our neighborhood is because we did ask for them, numerous times; most of ya’ll sitting on council helped us get those cameras, and I just want to say thank you for that because it’s protected me and it’s protected my community,” another resident said.
Irmo Police Chief Robert Dale also addressed the council, saying the cameras help solve crimes more quickly. Dale was among those who spoke in favor of expanding the program.
With the contract approved, the town will move forward with placing the additional cameras at strategic locations around Irmo.
