With many federal workers furloughed and others calling out amid the shutdown, security lines have stretched for hours at some of the nation’s busiest airports, leaving passengers scrambling to make flights and raising concerns about both travel delays and airport security operations.

USA Today: Security lines stretched for hours at several major U.S. airports Sunday, March 8, as a partial government shutdown and the start of spring break travel collided, leaving some passengers scrambling to make their flights. Airports, including Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, reported unusually long wait times at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints. At one point Sunday afternoon, security lines at Hobby Airport averaged about three and a half hours. By 6 p.m., waits were still around three hours (USA Today).

Becky Noble at RedState: The White House did not hold back, placing blame on airport security issues squarely on the backs of Democrats, citing the fact that they had negotiated a bipartisan funding bill for the year, but “walked away from the table, choosing illegal aliens over public safety and forcing these essential workers to serve without pay yet again.” DHS funding not only affects the TSA, but it also affects agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Coast Guard, essentially putting national security and the ability to respond to any emergencies or natural disasters in jeopardy (RedState).
