Italy: Moroccan Sentenced to 3-1/2 Years for Attempted Murder

A 49-year-old Moroccan man has been sentenced to 3-1/2 years of imprisonment and deportation by a judge in Treviso (Veneto), Italy. In an incident last year, the defendant broke a beer bottle during an argument with a local resident and tried to slit his throat. In all, the victim suffered 4 wounds to his ear and his face.

With the neck of a broken glass bottle, he hit the resident of Mogliano 4 times, aiming for the neck.

Fortunately, the blows did not hit him in the jugular, but the blows inflicted caused permanent damage to one ear and to his mouth. The attack, occurring in May of last year, resulted in the arrest of Moroccan Isam Rachid, 49, of Mogliano (defended by attorney Massimiliano Bruni). Now comes the conviction for attempted homicide. 

In a summary trial, Judge Carlo Colombo sentenced Rachid to three years, six months, and twenty days. Once the accused serves his sentence, he will be expelled from Italy. Rachid benefited from a 1/3rd reduction of sentence due to the summary trial and recognition of mitigating circumstances.  

The aggravating circumstance of trivial motives, argued by the prosecutor, was also dropped as the surveillance cameras of the Daspar Supermarket, located on via Roma, near the train station, where the attack occurred, show that the provocation between the two was reciprocal. The injured party, Luigi D., 49, of Mogliano, was part of the civil part (of the trial) along with attorney Massimo Benozzati.   

The attack

The two, in fact, knew each other because a few days previous, they had a heated argument. It appears that the resident of Mogliano, who lives in the vicinity, had reproached the Moroccan because he had harassed some young girls near the station. A few days later, in the afternoon of May 27, 2025, the two ran into each other on via Roma, near the Despar, behind the train station.

The bitterness of the argument of a few days previous, evidently, had not passed. During a new argument, the Moroccan, who had a bottle of beer in his hand, resorted to action. After smashing the bottle, Rachid lunged at the Mogliano resident with the clear intent to strike him in the throat. Four blows injured the 49-year-old in the face, and he still bears the scars.

First responses and the arrest

The incident occurred in front of several people, some of whom called 112. The Carabinieri arrived at the scene a short time later and found the resident of Mogliano on the ground in a pool of blood. The 118 emergency personnel, responding to the scene, quickly transported the injured person to the Ca’ Foncello di Treviso Hospital, while the Moroccan was arrested for attempted homicide by the Carabinieri from the Mogliano station 

After spending a few days in Santa Bona Prison, the Moroccan was placed under house arrest in the apartment where he lives in Mogliano.

The man is actually in the country legally, and, before the incident, had no criminal record. In the course of the investigation, the public prosecutor, Giovanni Valmassoi, had ordered an expert evaluation to determine if the blows inflicted were potentially fatal.

The conclusions of the expert were unequivocal. Analysing both the wounds of the injured party and the films of the supermarket, it was clear that the Moroccan struck to kill. Once the sentence is served, the Moroccan will be expelled from Italy, as ordered by Judge Colombo.
