Suicide or gangland murder?
In a scene reminiscent of those we have seen in recent years in places like Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, a body was found hanging from a highway traffic sign on the highway ring around Brussels on Sunday. It is not clear whether this was a gangland slaying (of which Belgium has its share) or a suicide. An autopsy is pending. The identity of the man is unknown to the public.

On Sunday morning on the Brussels Ring at Anderlecht, the lifeless body of a man was found. He was hanging behind a traffic sign and was tied to it with a rope or cable. It looked like a scene from one of the “Narcos” series on Netflix. Today, on the highway on the border between Dilbeek and Anderlecht, by the Westland Shopping Center, the body of a man was found. Not lying on the ground, but hanging behind an orange traffic sign fastened with a rope or a cable. Most likely, the lifeless body was hanging for some hours before the alarm was sounded at midday. “Some saw it this morning and thought it was a Halloween decoration,” said a source.

The Highway Police were the first at the scene, after which the case was turned over to the Federal Judicial Police. The death is considered suspicious, though it could also be a suicide. “It is reminiscent of how the Mexican cartels sometimes operate,” said a source close to the case.
The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.
