Germany: Police Shoot Afghan Knife Attacker to Death
Today in Germany, there was yet another case of an Afghan asylum-seeker trying to kill someone with a knife. Unfortunately for the Afghan, his intended victims were police officers who arrived at his home to take him into custody to begin a jail sentence for a previous attack. One officer was seriously injured, and the Afghan was shot dead.
The incident occurred in the southwestern town of Wangen (Göppingen District.) in Baden-Württemberg. As a personal note, I spent 2-3 months stationed in the town of Göppingen in 1966 as a military policeman with the 404th MP Company before being transferred to a detachment in Erlangen.

The police are going to pick up the asylum-seeker on a warrant when the situation escalates. In the end, a police officer is apparently seriously injured, and the attacker from Afghanistan is dead.
During an operation in Wangen in Göppingen District, east of Stuttgart, a 27-year-old man was shot by police. According to information from the State Police (LKA) in Stuttgart, he had attacked the officers with a knife.
There was a warrant for the Afghan asylum-seeker (issued) by the State prosecutor’s Office in Ulm. The man was to begin serving a sentence for assault with bodily injury. The police officers were going to pick him up. They found him at his home address. Then the man pulled a knife. The exact sequence of events is still to be investigated. The LKA has taken over the investigation into the use of firearms by police.
According to information from the police union, it is already the 7th time in 2025 that police in Baden-Württemberg have used firearms. In mid-April, police killed a man who had gone after them with an axe with several shots in Hilzingen near the Swiss border. A few days earlier, an officer in Schramberg, southwest of Tübingen, shot a 48-year-old who pointed a firearm at police and would not drop it after several commands.
Last year, police in Baden-Württemberg shot as many people as in several (previous) years-even though the number of cases is very low. According to information from the Interior Ministry, in 2024, police used their weapons 13 times against people. Three were killed and nine were injured.
The last time so many people were fired upon in the Southwest was 2020, when three of them also died. In the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, fewer cases were recorded.
“Once again a knife,” complains the union
The latest attack on the police again shows how violence against police officers continues to rise,” said the state chairman of the German Police Union (DPoliG), Ralf Kusteter. “More and more, we are the victims of violence. Once again, a knife.”
The politicians appear to be helpless or not ready to take the proper measures. “We are tired of political (expressions) of dismay, condolences, and wishes for recovery. When will the Interior Minister address the problems of those who carry knives on them?” said Kusterer.
