The first calls of the night came from the Associated Press, awarding Kentucky and Indiana to former president Donald Trump and giving Vermont’s electoral votes to Kamala Harris. None of the results were unexpected.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent, has won a fourth term in Vermont. Despite being an independent, Sanders is the leader of the progressive wing of the Democratic party and mounted a strong primary challenge to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential bid.
Separately, Rep. Jim Banks, a Republican and strong supporter of former president Donald Trump, won the Senate race in that state, according to the AP. He will replace Mike Braun, who was elected governor of the state Tuesday night, according to the AP.
