Tesla Autopilot Director: Cybercab fleet was using near-production AI software expected to ship in V13

Tesla Director of Autopilot Software Ashok Elluswamy recently shared some key insights about the Cybercab fleet that was operating at the company’s “We, Robot” Robotaxi unveiling event last week. As per the Tesla executive, the autonomous Cybercabs were running near-production AI software that is expected to ship in FSD V13.

The general lack of details about the Cybercab and the Robovan that were shared by Elon Musk at the Robotaxi unveiling event has resulted in some critics speculating that the vehicles showcased by the company might have been controlled via remote, similar to Optimus. As noted by the Tesla Autopilot Director in a post on social media platform X, however, the Cybercab fleet was indeed operating autonomously.

Elluswamy highlighted that a total of 19 Cybercabs and 29 Model Ys were driving themselves without a human operator during the “We, Robot” event. Over the course of the night, the vehicles completed 1,300 trips ferrying around the occasion’s over 2,000 attendees in a safe and proficient manner. This resulted in the autonomous vehicles operating continuously for more than 3.5 hours

The Tesla Autopilot Director stated that what was truly amazing was seeing how attendees quickly got used to the autonomous vehicles. But this was not all, as Elluswamy also noted that almost all of the autonomy demonstrated at “We, Robot” was using near-production AI software that is expected to ship in FSD V13.

“It was really amazing to see users take the robotaxis for granted. They didn’t seem to think twice before crossing in front of it, walking alongside it, robotaxis interacting with one another etc. They behaved just the same way they would around human-driven vehicles. The best part was that almost all of the autonomy demonstrated was using close to the production AI software or will ship soon in v13.

“Finally, it took an immense amount of effort from a very talented team to pull this off. The event was super motivating for the team, and we are looking forward to bringing this to the real world as soon as possible,” Elluswamy wrote in his post.

Elluswamy’s comments were received with much excitement from the electric vehicle community, especially since the Tesla AI Team has previously announced that it was aiming to release FSD V13 this October. A good number of Tesla owners and “We, Robot” attendees were also interested in the executive’s mention of Cybercabs “interacting with one another.” Elon Musk, for his part, was supportive of the Autopilot Director’s comments, stating that the Tesla team did great work.
