Sweden EV owners take more long trips than ICE drivers: study

A study from Swedish social research company Sifo and charging box company Zaptec has revealed that electric vehicle drivers actually take longer journeys in their EVs than drivers who drive combustion-powered cars. Similar findings were observed by Statistics Norway’s Traffic Analysis. 

Sifo and Zaptec’s study involved 1,082 respondents who currently drive a combustion powered car, as well as 1,032 people who currently drive an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid. The age range of the respondents from both EV and ICE drivers who participated in the survey was 18-79 years old. 

Based on the study’s findings, 54% of electric vehicle owners noted that they rarely or never experience range anxiety. About 45% of combustion-powered car drivers, however, still cited range anxiety as the main reason why they do not want an electric car. 

Despite these findings, it would appear that Sweden’s electric vehicle drivers are simply enjoying their extended time behind the wheel. As per the study, 31% of electric vehicle drivers in Sweden take journeys longer than 20 miles one way 11 or more times per year. Only 19% of combustion-powered car drivers in Sweden took similar trips. 

Sifo and Zaptec’s findings in their study are quite similar to Statistics Norway’s Traffic Analysis, which revealed that private electric vehicle drivers drive an average of 1,311 miles per year with their EVs. Private individuals who own gasoline-powered cars were found to drive an average of 878 miles per year, while drivers of diesel-powered cars drove an average of 1,364 miles, as observed by Tesla Club Sweden. 

There could be several reasons why electric vehicles are driven over long distances by their drivers. Thanks to their lack of engine noise and their typically comfortable cabins, EVs tend to be less taxing on drivers and passengers during long road trips. Cars like Tesla’s Model S, 3, X, and Y, all of which have Basic Autopilot by default, make long distance driving even easier as well.
