Rivian approved to expand its factory in Normal, Illinois
Electric vehicle (EV) maker Rivian has gained approval from the town of Normal, Illinois, to expand its factory as it prepares for production of its next-generation platform.
On Monday, Normal Town Council voted almost unanimously to approve an expansion of the Rivian plant, set to add about 1.3 million square feet and prepare the automaker for production of the upcoming R2 EV platform. The council voted in favor of the expansion project, with every member voting yes with the exception of Mayor Chris Koos, who was not present during the meeting.

The Rivian factory expansion will include a 1.14 million square foot building, along with an additional 208,000-square-foot facility, both of which will be constructed near the current plant’s southeast corner. The expansion will also oversee the construction of two new parking lots for workers, including around 1,600 new parking spaces.
The approval also gives Rivian the ability to build beyond height limits the M-2 manufacturing facility was previously zoned for, letting the automaker build a 64-foot conveyor system despite previous the previous zoning height limit of 45 feet.
Despite the approval, authorities will still need to conduct evaluations of water runoff from storms and traffic before beginning construction.

Although the EV maker was originally planning to produce the R2 at an upcoming factory in Georgia, the company announced plans to move production to the Normal plant to help accelerate the start of production. Following the decision, Rivian was awarded with an $827 million incentive package from the state of Illinois, set to be used for the expansion plans.
Rivian also recently gained a $5 billion investment from Volkswagen, with the two companies establishing a partnership and joint venture on software and EV production.
