Hyundai’s 2030 targets rely on mixed offerings of electric, hybrid & hydrogen vehicles

Hyundai Motor recently held its 2024 CEO Investor Day in Seoul, discussing its mid-to-long-term goals. The company unveiled its new “Hyundai Way” strategy, which covers the steps it will take to diversify its portfolio by offering electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles or modes of transportation.

“Under the Hyundai Way, we will respond to the market with agility thanks to Hyundai’s unique flexible response system. This will secure sustainable leadership in an uncertain market environment and strategically position the company to create a future centered on mobility and energy,” noted President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company Jaehoon Chang.

Hyundai’s EV Strategy

Through the Hyundai Way, the South Korean company aims to reach an annual global sales of 5.55 million units by 2030, up 30% from 2023. Electric vehicles (EVs) will make up a significant chunk of Hyundai’s sales as the company aims to sell 2 million EVs annually worldwide by 2030.

Hyundai has started ramping up local production to reach its EV goals, specifically focusing on manufacturing its popular IONIQ BEV series. For instance, it started producing IONIQ vehicles locally in Thailand and Singapore this year. The company also aims to begin making the IONIQ 5 EV in the United States next year at its Georgia plant.

Hyundai’s Hybrid Plans

Hyundai also plans to ramp up hybrid vehicle releases over the next few years. For instance, its new Metaplant in Georgia will produce hybrid vehicles alongside pure EVs. The company has extensive experience in the hybrid car market thanks to its TMED hybrid system.

Hyundai plans to release its next-generation TMED-II hybrid system in upcoming large and luxury vehicles, going beyond its usual compact and midsize hybrid car offerings. As such, the company will double its hybrid offerings from seven to 14 models.

Hyundai Hydrogen Goals

When it comes to hydrogen mobility, Hyundai is targeting specific hard-to-abate sectors like oil, cement, and steel.

Through its hydrogen value chain business brand, HTWO, Hyundai plans to expand its fuel cell lineup to different modes of transportation like trams/trains, airplanes, and ships.

“Hyundai will strengthen its position as a game changer by expanding beyond vehicle manufacturing to various forms of mobility. By enhancing the role of energy business operators and realizing a hydrogen society, we intend to transform into a company that can maintain global top-tier leadership in the era of energy transition,” Chang said.
