The air-to-air missile landscape is experiencing intense development driven by advanced systems from China and Russia, with Western powers responding through next-generation beyond-visual-range capabilities. China’s PL-15, featuring an Active Electronically Scanned Array radar seeker and dual-pulse rocket motor, saw combat deployment by Pakistan against India in May 2025, reportedly downing an Indian Rafale. Russia’s new KS-172 claims engagement ranges over 400 kilometers at speeds exceeding Mach 5.
