Lee Rhiannon’s asylum seeker solution

The Australian is reporting that Greens senator Lee Rhiannon has specific solution to “save lives”

Greens senator Lee Rhiannon said the party was opposing the Oakeshott compromise because it wanted to “welcome refugees to Australia, refugees who have a right to come to this country”.

She said she understood why asylum-seekers attempted the hazardous journey by boat but the Greens would block the measure because “we want to save lives“.

The Greens proposal, Senator Rhiannon said, had “some very specific ways that we could come together to ensure (the) safety of refugees who so often take a very perilous trip when they decide to leave their country”.

It is understood that Rhiannon wants to establish an international hotline. A person wishing to become an asylum seeker would ring the toll-free Australian hotline and the Australian Government would dispatch a charter plane to collect the asylum seeker. Under the Rhiannon scheme, there would be no quota, and Australia would send as many charter flights as  needed to meet the demand. A fully-furnish environmentally-friendly apartment would be given to the asylum seeker on arrival, and a lifetime fortnightly payment to assist in adjusting to life in Australia.

When asked whether the scheme would be too expensive, Rhiannon was reported to have said

you cannot put a price on human lives.
