Environmental permitting process friendlier to businesses under plan approved by Texas House
Opponents of companies applying for certain state environmental permits will now have to make their case for denying the permits rather than the burden resting with the companies, should the Legislature give final approval of an amendment approved by the House.
The Austin American-Statesman says the House approved the amendment by state Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, to a bill accepting the recommendation by the Sunset Advisory Commission to reauthorize TCEQ.
On April 10 the House passed HB 125 which, if signed into law, would require the commission to include a study of the economic impact of any of its environmental or public health decision on the companies affected by them.
Both the Chisum amendment and HB 125 are opposed by environmental groups that argue the changes would make the cost of environmental regulation prohibitive.
