The ban reportedly extends to spouses and children of U.S. citizens. It targets countries where the administration contends a high percentage of the population relies on welfare programs.
The new freeze brings the total number of banned nationalities to 93. While a specific official list of all 75 countries was not immediately published in all reports, internal State Department cables cited countries such as Tong, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu as being under scrutiny for failing to meet new self-sufficiency benchmarks.
Projections suggest this and related bans could reduce legal immigration by more than 324,000 people (approximately 48%) in the upcoming year.
The State Department began implementing these freezes immediately following Supreme Court rulings that provided legal backing for stricter immigration regulations.
This policy is part of a broader “America First” effort to ensure that incoming immigrants are financially self-sufficient and do not place undue pressure on taxpayer-funded programs like Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
