NYC Mayor Eric Adams Calls Immigration System Broken - It Isn't
Article posted with permission from the author, Suzanne Hamner.
What is it with the donkey politicians who continually make the claim, “Our immigration system is broken”? The latest donkey to make the claim and state the immigration system needs to be fixed is New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
“My concern is one concern. We keep tinkering around the edges, we keep having this philosophical conversation about it. The voters communicated loudly and clearly,” he said. “We have a broken immigration system. It needs to be fixed. That’s the only conversation I want.”
Voters have communicated loudly and clearly the immigration system is broken? Seriously? Is this what Mayor Adams surmised from this election/selection?

On Tuesday, while answering questions from reporters, Adams indicated he could be on board with the Trump administration regarding border control and mass deportation plans, even though Adams previously admitted New York City will remain a sanctuary city.
New York has essentially become a border city as illegal immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers have flooded in under the Biden-Harris administration’s open border policies. Some 10,000 people were coming into the city at its peak, and the city was expected to house and feed these people with barely any help from the federal government. Being both a sanctuary city and a city with a right-to-shelter law, their own mandates required it.
…
Adams has been outspoken against the administration for their border failures and has repeatedly called for more aid to deal with the huge influx. The city conducted a pilot program to give illegal immigrant families staying in city shelters debit cards of up to $350 per week, but once the pilot program ends, it will not be renewed or adopted.
Mayor Adams went on to say, “And New York City was devastated by that broken system. 220,000 migrants and asylum seekers have made their way here, no financial assistance from the administration. I think it was about 200 and something million dollars, with billions of dollars we had to pay for. I don’t want to see something like that happen again. I don’t want what’s taking place in Chicago and Denver, Los Angeles, Houston, I don’t want to see it take place again. Let’s fix our immigration system. Anything other than that I’m not interested in that conversation. We have a broken immigration system.”
The question for Mayor Adams is simple; “Can you explain what is broken about the immigration system?”
Adams would never admit the problem with the immigration system is the government refusing to enforce our immigration laws in their entirety. It’s not the system that is broken. It is the people in government – representatives, senators, presidents, department heads, etc. – that are the problem. Adding to the issue are mayors and governors deciding to ignore federal immigration law by declaring their cities and states as “sanctuaries” for criminals – illegal alien invaders. The federal government was given authority in the Constitution for immigration and naturalization. Cities and States have “concurrent jurisdiction” when it comes to immigration law.
Joanna Martin, JD, aka Publius Huldah, explains concurrent jurisdiction.
Let’s look now at “concurrent jurisdiction” – where the Constitution authorizes the federal government to act and does not prohibit the States from acting on the same matter. Here, the federal government and the States have “a concurrent and coequal authority“ (Federalist No. 32, 3rd para)! Might there be some conflicts when both the federal government and State governments are acting on the same matter? Yes! But as Hamilton pointed out:
It is not …a mere possibility of inconvenience in the exercise of powers, but an immediate constitutional repugnancy that can …alienate and extinguish a pre-existing right of sovereignty [in the States]. (4th para)
The necessity of a concurrent jurisdiction in certain cases results from the division of the sovereign power; and the rule that all authorities, of which the States are not explicitly divested in favor of the Union, remain with them in full vigor…[This]is…clearly admitted by the whole tenor of the…proposed Constitution. We there find that, notwith-standing the …grants of …authorities [to the federal government], there has been the most pointed care in those cases where it was deemed improper that the like authorities should reside in the States, to insert negative clauses prohibiting the exercise of them by the States…[Art. I, Sec. 10] consists altogether of such provisions. This circumstance is a clear indication of the sense of the convention, and furnishes a rule of interpretation out of the body of the…[proposed Constitution], which…refutes every hypothesis to the contrary. (5th para)
So! Even where the Constitution delegates a power to the federal government, the Sovereign States retain a concurrent and coequal authority over the same matter unless the Constitution specifically prohibits the States from exercising that power.
While States cannot make independent laws concerning citizenship, as that is the sole authority of the federal government, States can detain illegal alien invaders and hand them over to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But, Adams, in his ignorance, boldly thumbed his nose at immigration law to declare his city a “sanctuary” for illegal alien invader criminals. Where in the Constitution is the authority given to cities to thwart constitutional immigration laws? Where is the authority given to States to do so? Remember, there is no right to violate a just and righteous law or laws made pursuant to the Constitution. Instead, Adams should have contacted the governor to exercise concurrent jurisdiction by handing over illegal alien invaders to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement when arrested for committing crimes.
Adams then complained about the problems in his declared “sanctuary city”.
The reporter asked further about his thoughts on how to deal with the reality in the city, not just the federal problem. To that, Adams replied that the “city should not be dealing with a national problem” and indicated that New York needed more money to deal with the existing issues. “There are those here who are repeated offenders,” he said, “we need to address that. “You don’t come to our city and our country and commit violent acts on innocent people.”
Adams refuses to take responsibility for his city dealing with a national problem. He declared New York City a “sanctuary” for illegal alien invaders who took the sanctuary status to mean they could do whatever they wanted with impunity. Unfortunately, Adams doesn’t realize that the national problem of the federal government refusing to enforce immigration and naturalization laws becomes a problem for all States and cities. His concern is more with getting money from the federal government, which comes from the taxpayers, to deal with a problem he created.
But, he wasn’t the only one who created a problem. Texas Governor Greg Abbott of the elephant politicians bussed illegal alien invaders from his state to New York City and other sanctuary cities to get them out of his state. What Abbott should have done was send them packing back over the border. After all, States were essentially being invaded at the behest of the Biden-Harris administration, without any burp from Congress.
Adams lamented New York City as “being devastated by the broken system”.
“It’s broken and it needs to be fixed,” Adams went on. “And New York City was devastated by that broken system. 220,000 migrants and asylum seekers have made their way here, no financial assistance from the administration. I think it was about 200 and something million dollars, with billions of dollars we had to pay for. I don’t want to see something like that happen again.
Adams volunteered his city to pay for these illegal alien invaders when he declared, unlawfully, New York City to be a sanctuary for illegal alien invaders. In truth, he is only lamenting the federal government didn’t pay for his folly. Adams really doesn’t want to have an honest conversation about immigration and illegal alien invaders. He wants to continue the status quo while everyone else in America pays for his “sanctuary” policy.
The real conversation that needs to be had regarding immigration and illegal alien invaders is a simple one. No president should be able to use a “memo” or an executive order to negate a law passed by Congress pursuant to the Constitution, regardless of whether they are a donkey or an elephant. But, that is not what will happen. The real conversation revolves around presidents exercising dictatorial powers the Constitution does not authorize the president. Executive orders are misused and abused to implement policy in violation of the law. The infamous “pen and phone” tyranny needs to be stopped. Any president misusing and abusing executive order authority should be impeached, tried, and if found guilty, removed from office. Officials like Adams should also be recalled, arrested, and tried for treason. If convicted, Adams should suffer the penalty reserved for traitors.
The true solution is for Americans to throw off the lawless, corrupt, criminal politicians at the local and State levels, elect true statesmen representatives, and statesmen governors to interpose against the tyrannical, dictatorial, oligarchy of the federal government, stand for the Constitution, and laws passed in pursuance of it.
