What DNA sequencing revealed about tanning bed damage
Researchers at Northwestern University and UC San Francisco performed single-cell DNA sequencing on melanocytes from three groups: 11 patients with extreme tanning bed histories (ranging from 50 to over 750 lifetime sessions), nine patients who never used tanning beds but were matched for age and cancer risk, and six cadaver donors for additional controls.
Scientists sequenced 182 individual melanocytes – the pigment-producing cells where melanoma begins. Skin cells from tanning bed users had mutation burdens nearly twofold that of melanocytes from control donors. But here’s what changes everything: those mutations appeared in body areas that typically remain protected from sun exposure.
Lead researcher Pedram Gerami noted that in outdoor sun exposure, maybe 20% of your skin is most at risk of damage. In tanning bed users, they found those same dangerous mutations across almost the entire skin surface, representing nearly 1.5 times the body surface area of heavily sun-exposed skin.
Among tanning bed users, 23% of melanocytes had pathogenic mutations – the specific DNA changes that drive melanoma development – compared to just 7.3% in controls.
Gerami, who directs the melanoma program at Northwestern, noticed something disturbing over 20 years of practice: an unusually high number of women under 50 developing multiple melanomas on body sites that receive minimal sun exposure, like the lower back and buttocks.
Why the industry’s safety claims were always fraudulent
The tanning bed industry claimed that its UV ratios were safer than those of natural sunlight because it emphasized UVA over the more mutagenic UVB. Natural sunlight reaching Earth’s surface is 95% UVA and 5% UVB.
Tanning beds typically have even higher proportions of UVA relative to UVB, but the absolute irradiance of tanning beds is similar to outdoor sunlight in the UVB range and 10 to 15 times higher in the UVA range than outdoor sunlight.
The World Health Organization classifies tanning beds as group 1 carcinogens, the same category as asbestos and cigarette smoke. Yet the industry continues operating nationwide.
