More cucumbers from Bedner Growers recalled because of link to Salmonella outbreak

PennRose Farms LLC is recalling 5-pound mesh bags of whole cucumbers because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The company initiated the recall after it was notified by its supplier, Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc., that these cucumbers are being recalled by Bedner Growers Inc. and have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The Bedner cucumbers have been determined to be the cause of a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened people across 15 states, according to the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cucumbers from Bederner were determined to be the source of Salmonella in a 2024 outbreak also.

Bedner has recalled its cucumbers, but because of the long shelf life of the vegetable there is concern that some consumers may still have the cucumbers in their homes.

PennRose Farms repacked some of the Bedner cucumbers in 5-pound mesh bags showing Restaurant Depot and PennRose Farms logos. The bags can be identified using the UPC code 841214101714, packaged between May 2-May 5, with lot numbers (48-122, 48-123, 48-124, 48-125). These products were shipped to Restaurant Depot distribution centers located in New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Illinois and Ohio.

No other PennRose Farms packaged products are impacted by this recall. It has advised the distribution centers it works with of the recall and directed them to alert customers that received the products.

Consumers that have Restaurant Depot and PennRose Farms cucumbers covered by this recall are urged not to consume them and to discard them immediately. Restaurants, retailers, and distributors that have the recalled cucumbers should destroy them. 

If the product has been served to consumers, they should be notified of the potential health concern. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products may obtain additional information by contacting PennRose Farms at 800-804-7254. Consumers with health concerns should consult directly with their health care providers.

About Salmonella infections
Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually look, smell, or taste spoiled. Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection. Infants, children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are fragile, according to the CDC.

Anyone who has eaten any of the recalled cucumbers and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Otherwise, healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days. In some cases, however, diarrhea may be so severe that patients require hospitalization.

Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop a severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.

Some people get infected without getting sick or showing any symptoms. However, they may still spread the infections to others.
