5 Safe Sleep Tips for Newborn Babies

Some 4,000 babies die unexpectedly in their sleep every year in the United States. Some of these cases have unexplained causes, like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, while others may have been prevented by using proper sleep techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed a set of Safe Sleep Recommendations that all parents of new babies are encouraged to follow. Here are 5 of the most important tips.

  1. Place babies to sleep on their backs.

This is the number one thing parents can do to reduce the risk of complications while sleeping. According to infant sleep resource SafeSleep by MonBaby, it’s also been shown to dramatically reduce SIDS risk. Babies are far more likely to die of SIDS when placed to sleep on their tummies or sides.

  1. Keep an empty crib.

While it may seem rational to fill your baby’s crib with comforting objects, loose blankets, pillows and stuffed animals actually pose a suffocation risk. For the safest environment for your baby, her crib should be free of all items, including pillows.

  1. Give baby a firm surface to sleep on.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all babies sleep on a firm, flat mattress with only a fitted sheet. This is a much safer sleep environment than an adult bed, a recliner or even a stroller.

  1. Never sleep with your baby.

Co-sleeping is blamed for thousands of infant deaths each year. There’s a risk you or your bedding will smother your baby in your sleep, or that your baby will become trapped between the bed and the wall. If you want to be close to your baby while sleeping, keep her crib in the same room or use a bassinette by your bedside.

  1. Don’t clothe your baby too heavily.

Babies should be placed to sleep in light, breathable clothing consistent with the weather wherever you live. Babies should never be placed to sleep in heavy clothing or covered with blankets, as they pose a risk for overheating.

By following these safe sleep recommendations, you’ll lower your baby’s chances for sleep-related complications during her first year. It’s important to note that doctors are unsure of the cause of SIDS, and there is no known way to prevent it. For more safe sleep tips and insights, visit SafeSleep.MonBaby.com
