OK, I admit it: I simply took excerpts from thirty-one emails that appeared in my gmail inbox yesterday, and then ran them together somewhat inappropriately.

I didn’t do it just for fun; I did it to mirror the experience that observers, hacks and writers generally get when receiving information online. Yes, the result is vaguely amusing on the one hand….but confusing on the other.

Life and what’s-going-on is hugely complex in 2024, but Slog’s 3D theory of contemporary media is even more important than it was in 2011 when I first presented it to the sound of breathtaking yawns globally:

distraction + distortion = deception.

Email today is an incredibly overcrowded medium, and the situation is being exacerbated by the involvement of AI in the the automation of the subscription process. What used to take a week in the library thirty years ago can be accessed online within seconds. Like almost all Artificial Intelligence however, what at first looks like progress turns out to be heading in the wrong direction: it’s not much of an outcome if tech simply makes it even easier for the those who distract and distort to deceive.
Well – fair play – if you’re the CIA, GCHQ or the Surete, it’s a terrific result because the mushrooms are even more in the dark than they were last week.

But mainly, they’re utterly confused. Which – as the late CIA boss Richard Helms once observed – has been the central goal of the Secret State for the best part of half a century.

I no longer use AI gadgetry to pick up subscribers. It doesn’t really work anyway: keen followers stick with one’s work once they’re clear about where to find you. Casual auto-receipt button pushers tend to unsubscribe within a month. All AI does is waste a writer’s time competing with other White Hat people.

That’s not really the point: the idea is to persuade by use of The Truth. Stick to your principles on the Trust element, and people can see soon enough you’re not a crook.
