Police ask for help in catching several possibly myopic shoplifters in Ottawa

Curious report about a semi-thwarted robbery in Ottawa by enemy propaganda site, CTV:

First the ‘news’.

Now an excerpt of the story as told:

Ottawa police are seeking three suspects following a robbery at an eyewear store in Barrhaven earlier this week.

As CTV News Ottawa first reported, the incident happened at around 7:25 p.m. Monday at Eyes of Barrhaven on Strandherd Drive. Four people came into the store and started taking product off the shelves(opens in a new tab). The store owner and other bystanders wrestled one suspect to the ground and held him until police arrived, but three others escaped.

Now, police are looking for information about those three additional suspects.

The suspects are described as follows:

• male, 40-50 years old, white, balding brown hair with a goatee;
• female, 30-40 years old, white, black hair and black Timberland hoodie;
• male, white, wearing a mask.

Ottawa police arrested one man at the scene. 

Shane Albert, 40, is charged with robbery with violence, possession of property obtained by crime, theft, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and breach of probation.

Store owner Awni George told CTV News Ottawa on Thursday he believes he’s lost more than $15,000 worth of merchandise to multiple recent thefts and he suspects the same people were involved each time.

“It’s very damaging to a small business that we have to constantly be in this state of fear, in the state of alarm. And at the same time, financially, we’re burdened by these criminals constantly coming in and committing these crimes against us,” he said.

On the surface, it’s kinda a nothing story. Hard to understand how it even made CTV. Four guys shoplifted glasses frames from a store and the owner stopped one of them. Ok. Anyone know any police? When you have a few hours to kill, ask one you know personally about shoplifting in Ottawa, and what happens to the thieves and if police ever answer calls on it, let alone show up to the scene.

As it happens, I do.

The following are off the record stories told to me by people I know personally, and who actually experienced what they described from personal or professional experience. As I can’t name any of them, feel free to ignore what follows. Still though, many of you may have heard similar stories in your day-to-day lives or you could ask store workers or police or security people you know about their own experience in related events:

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to sit down and have dinner with a retired Ottawa Police officer. From the lengthy conversation we had, he was very in tune with reality, which one would expect of a police officer, although perhaps one might not expect to hear much reality from those still serving on the force.

He was also sharp as a tack and had a solid grasp on the changes taking place at the administrative level within the police force.

The conversation started because at another table at the same dinner, some other people had been trading stories about how in various Ontario small towns and cities, thieves would go into stores, large and small, would take whatever they want, walk right up to security cameras and open a product in front of it knowingly, tell the staff there was nothing they could do, and walk out. Police, they explained, would not come to the calls, and the stores stopped calling them. Others at the table were aghast. How can this be the case? Have laws concerning property been changed?

That’s where I chimed in. It seemed to me that this was a de facto Vs. De jure issue. The law itself was likely not changed, but the police have instructions not to enforce the laws, thereby in reality, changing the laws. So the reality is theft is legal for some, but perhaps not others, and enforcement would operate that way, The law would be used, what is the word… dialectically. To make sure that the outcome was destructive to society and not for the purpose for which it was written.

So I went and asked the retired officer at another table. Yes, it was explained, police won’t even answer the phone, he said metaphorically, on a shoplifting call. They won’t do anything and in a sense cannot.

More recently, a couple of personal friends of mine discussed personal experiences they had at a liquor store in Ottawa. A man walked in, filled a container with liquor and walked out right in front of a ‘security guard’ and all the sales staff. My friend asked why that was and if they could just do that instead of you know, buying it. He was received with shrugs and an explanation that they had instructions not to do anything about it.

So why was this other story about the glasses store in the news when literally ANY store clerk from pretty much any store has near daily experience with shoplifters and the fact they can do nothing about it. Back around 2000 or so, I knew a girl who worked at a high end clothing store. She told me weekly stories about girls walking in and walking out with large amounts of expensive clothing.

Even back then, ,the best the store could hope for was that the large urban mall where the store was located would give the thieves a temporary ban from entering the mall. But that’s about all that would happen to them.

Personally, I have no idea why this glasses store got such special attention from the ‘News’ and police when clerks have been stopping or trying to stop thieves on at least a weekly basis. Meanwhile, let’s be on the lookout for the perps though! And fortunately, CTV news was kind enough to furnish us with names and descriptions of these dangerous individuals, which is something they nearly never do when its, well actual dangerous crime. The best we get is a one liner about the actual event: ‘shots fired’, ‘man stabbed’, ‘woman gang raped’ and maybe 15 paragraphs of how various quasi-related people who happened to be in the area or had friends in the area felt about it all. But nearly never do we get names or descriptions.

We can feel blessed that we did this time so we can help police find these dangerous albeit probably myopic criminals. Here’s the description again in case you missed it above:

The following video is an UPDATED CTV News report on a multi person homicide. It is 3 seconds of information and 3 minutes of people somewhere nearby reacting to it but had as much to do with it as people drinking at a pub in Tipperary. The original news report which we posted a few days ago, actually had less real information. But at least they had the excuse that it had just happened.
