S&P 500 Falls as Investors Shift Forward-Looking Focus Back to 2026-Q4
The S&P 500 (Index: SPX) fell 1.95% in the trading week ending on Friday, 16 October 2026. The index closed out the week at 7,659.44, which is a little over 2% below its all-time record high from earlier in the month.
The biggest market-moving events of the week came on Wednesday and Thursday with the one-two punch of the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index inflation reports both coming in higher than had been expected thanks largely to oil prices. While both are still a far cry from the high inflation unleashed by the Biden administration, they were enough to prompt investors to shift their attention from 2027-Q1 back into the current quarter of 2026-Q4 because of their potential to affect how the Fed will be setting interest rates during the quarter and raised the specter of the Fed hiking rates during October 2026.
By the end of the week however, the CME Group’s FedWatch Tool outlook was mostly unchanged from the previous week. The FedWatch tool continues to project the Fed will act to hike the Federal Funds Rate by a quarter point on 9 December (2026-Q4), followed by additional quarter point rate hikes that will be announced when the Fed’s rate-setting Open Market Committee meets on 17 March (2027-Q1) and 28 April (2027-Q2). This last hike represents the only meaningful change from the preceding week, which is now projected to take place six weeks earlier than it had been. The FedWatch Tool’s probabilities however suggest it will not take much for it slip back to 9 June (2027-Q2).
latest update of the dividend futures-based model‘s alternative futures chart better shows how the changes in how far investors are looking into the future are resulting in the changes in stock prices.
There’s not much difference between 2026-Q4 and 2027-Q1′s rates of expected dividend growth, so the change in stock prices is less impressive than others we’ve tracked in the past. All the same, unless we see serious erosion in the outlook for dividends, stock prices will likely continue following the trajectory that aligns most closely with how far into the future investors are focusing their attention. If you know which point of time in the future that is, you’ll know where stock prices are likely to go next.
In practice, that’s something that can be determined by the random onset of new information like the market-moving headlines that investors absorbed during the trading week ending on Friday, 16 October 2026….
