Revised federal data showed that 2025 experienced almost zero job growth, with employers adding only 181,000 jobs last year—a massive drop from the 1.46 million added in 2024. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated in late 2025 that official government data may have overestimated monthly job creation by as much as 60,000, suggesting the economy was actually shedding jobs rather than adding them.
Many job postings in 2024 and 2025 were deemed “ghost jobs”—roles that companies advertised but did not actually intend to fill, or jobs that were, upon closer inspection, low-wage, non-supervisory positions.A 2025 survey found that 65 percent of employees experienced “ghost growth,” where they received more responsibilities or title changes without corresponding increases in pay, authority, or benefits.
The perception of a “booming” market was driven by the rapid, record-setting recovery from the pandemic-era shutdowns (2021-2023). However, this rapid growth proved unsustainable, and as companies began “right-sizing” and cutting costs, the hiring surge evaporated, leaving a “low-hire, low-fire” market that is putting significant strain on workers.
