Venezuela Part of The New Monroe Doctrine
President Donald Trump has launched a new military campaign against Latin American drug cartels, beginning with drone strikes that destroyed suspected smuggling boats in the Caribbean. Framed as a war on “narcoterrorism,” the strikes form part of a broader geopolitical strategy known within his administration as the “Donroe Doctrine.”
Behind the campaign lies a fusion of old wartime laws, intelligence operations, and trade policies aimed at reasserting U.S. dominance in the Western Hemisphere and curbing Chinese and Russian influence, particularly in Venezuela. A massive U.S. naval presence off Venezuela’s coast has fueled speculation of a regime-change effort against Nicolás Maduro, with Trump openly linking his government to drug cartels.
Advisers Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller have helped shape the initiative, which intertwines Trump’s goals on national security, immigration, and economic control. The administration is also using the regional buildup to strengthen U.S. influence in Guyana, Suriname, and Argentina, promoting American investment and pressuring nations to distance themselves from Beijing.
Beyond Latin America, the strategy extends to Africa, where Trump has pivoted toward mineral-rich nations to counter China’s dominance in rare earth supplies.
While the campaign has bolstered Trump’s political standing at home, it has drawn international criticism. Several Latin American leaders accuse the U.S. of unlawful aggression and risking regional stability under the guise of counter-narcotics operations.
