Atlantic City Casino Revenue Drops as Industry Faces Growing Pressure

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Something serious is happening in Atlantic City. New Jersey’s casino industry took a major hit in Q1 2025, with revenue dropping 5.1% to $730.3 million. This follows the troubling trend that started in late 2024, when revenues already declined 1.7% in the fourth quarter. The mainstream media mentions these figures in passing, but they’re not asking the deeper questions about what’s driving this decline.

The numbers paint a picture of an industry under siege, with consecutive quarters of losses suggesting this isn’t just seasonal fluctuation or post-pandemic recovery lag.

Traditional brick-and-mortar casinos struggle as many Americans are turning to alternative gaming options like a sweepstakes casino. These operate under different regulations and offer a completely different approach to online gaming entertainment. These platforms have grown recently because people seek accessible gaming options that don’t require the same financial commitments as traditional casinos.

Here’s where it gets interesting: while revenue dropped by about 5%, operating profits got absolutely hammered, falling 15.1% to just $132 million. When you think about it, these casinos are making less money while their costs apparently stayed the same or increased. Hotel occupancy dropped from 64.8% to 62.9%, yet room rates climbed to $159.13. Someone’s trying to squeeze more money out of fewer customers, and it’s not working.

Maybe charging higher prices to have fewer guests makes sense, except that less gambling and less overall spending from unhappy guests weakens the situation. The fact that fixed costs cannot be removed when the business is quiet explains the 15% operating profit decline. And as room rates went up, consumers were already feeling nervous about inflation which had raised prices on gas and groceries. Atlantic City isn’t Vegas; people here are more price-sensitive and have plenty of other entertainment options within driving distance.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Atlantic City’s casinos. Pennsylvania’s neighboring casinos continue expanding their offerings while New York explores further gaming legalization, creating additional regional competition for the same pool of tri-state area customers.

The individual casino numbers tell an even more revealing story. Hard Rock managed to grow revenue by 1.2% to $135 million, and Tropicana actually improved their operating profit by 7.1%. But look at the big players: Caesars saw revenue drop 15.9% and their operating profit collapsed by 66.5%. It’s like watching a high-stakes poker game where some players are doubling down while others are folding spectacular hands. When you step back and look at the bigger picture, this isn’t just a bad quarter—it’s a pattern that suggests something fundamental is shifting.

The disparity between winners and losers hints at a market that’s becoming increasingly unforgiving of mediocrity. While some properties adapt and thrive, others are discovering that brand recognition alone won’t sustain them when customer expectations aren’t met at premium price points.
