‘Please don’t go’
What if the baby Jesus had been born on the frozen Canadian prairie? In a CNR boxcar? A Nova Scotia fishing hut? An igloo? Or in the thick woods across the river from Parliament Hill?
Canadian painter William Kurelek imagined such things. Not long before his death in 1977 he created twenty canvasses depicting this. His ‘Northern Nativity’ series was religious, of course, but more Canadian than devout. The paintings are actually all sad, mostly showing Mary, Joseph and the kid being shunned, ignored, forgotten or abandoned. The artist juxtaposed a purity and ideal against a world that seemingly wanted nothing to do with it.
Of course, you don’t need to be Christian, or religious, or believe in anything past your last breath to know right from wrong. Morality, ethics, decency, tolerance and compassion for others are inside us at birth. Babies are not born hateful. Children aren’t prejudiced. We learn that stuff.
Then we must unlearn it.
It’s a darker country now. Maybe it’s politics, fear, social media, migration, inflation or the price of a house that’s fostered this us-vs-them society. Whatever. The path we’re on is wrong.
The final painting in Kurelek’s series, above, speaks to that. The artist, depicting himself dreaming of this, wrote:
“On the first Christmas Joseph dreamed of an angel who told him to flee to a far country. They have been given a horse and buggy by a community of devout farming families. They are off now and seem to be taking the warmth with Them as They disappear into the blowing snow. William had grown fond of Them as he followed Their fortunes throughout his country. Now he tries to run after Them, to beg Them to stay. But his legs sink deeper into the snow and he cannot move. He calls to Them in panic: ‘Please don’t go!’ This time he is heard. Their compassionate words float back to him through the blizzard: ‘We will return one day — when you are ready to receive Us with undivided love.’ “
Not ready yet, apparently.
